Hi Robert, The panel wouldn’t stick to it so needed to come off and start again.
I didn’t know that you could get butyl on a strip though. That would certainly be cleaner and easier to install.

I used this to stick the weather strip down across the Shed doors Malc, it does set whereas the butyl doesn’t fully cure.

Tony.
I think that's one of the attractions of the butyl. It seals without curing so it can be pulled apart again more easily.

Can't remember what size I use. I use one size for the doors and one for the roof rear bulkhead. It also has the advantage it will stick to existing butyl - which is a messy job getting off hence why I mention it.

@Mazza acoustic non setting mastic is used on site as it stays flexible when in place. There are several other non setting mastics you could look for rather than one that goes off hard. Just a thought for you.

Nice job too, your 1.9 is going to be the best in show at this rate.

Just a bit of Malkyglym today .....

Cleaned all the carpets and put the seats back.
Having access, I did check underneath the carpets as about two years ago there was a swimming pool on the passenger side and had to remove everything to dry it all out. Happily everything bone dry.
I reckon it was a leaking roof that caused the flood as a new roof had been fitted about 3 months before I bought it.
If I hadn’t decided to fit heat pads into the seats when I did, I would never have know about all the water.

At least they are back in, all electrics working and no clonking from under the seat.

Now just need the butyl rubber that I ordered ( thanks for the info @mrscalex ) and the doors can be reassembled, get the armrest back from James ( @Jjim ) in due course, and the centre console can all go back in,
Bleed the brakes and clutch, then refit the undertray, spare wheel, and exhaust ( although I need to modify its rear bracket to get the tail pipe sitting in the aperture correctly) and the wheels back on and thats it !!!:):)

Other than, I think my steering wheel looks pretty shabby..........wonder if I should fit a matching red one??????????:whistle:

This rebuild has been a long and winding road....( cue for a song......only joking !!!=))), but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

And it will all be done in time to sit in the garage for another two months as we wait for the all clear to be allowed out again:arghh:

By the way.......Anyone notice how cheap petrol and diesel is at the moment, wait till the ban is lifted and it will shoot back up again

Sure I know of a matching steering wheel. PM me if you want to talk about it further.

Need to read Bentleys today to see how to remove a steering wheel ............
......I will have a tanin red one arriving soon :):):):)

But before that, made a real Heath Robinson reservoir brake fluid extractor.

8D74B4C1-CFD6-486D-B80A-CB1E5C366A99.jpeg

I used a small amount of this silicon about 2 years ago to stick a new insulation pad in the boiler and it had now gone solid.
So cut the end off just in front of where the piston was, so I could recover it with out damaging it.
7C6D01EC-9D1B-48FD-8DF6-DABDCB20F123.jpeg

Drilled down about 2 inches into the silicon ( then had to get the hoover to clean up all the mess:arghh:) and used a hook and it pulled the whole lump of dried silicon out.
Drilled a 5mm hole in the centre of the piston and also down into a piece of 14mm wooden dowel ( left over from when I made the tool rack)
A woodscrew, rubber washer and plain washer and made the plunger.

And the finished tool
F1B2A8A5-CEAA-4FC1-804A-10E6A682EE02.jpeg

And amazingly it works. (Tried it sucking up water)
Should suck out any crap at the bottom of the reservoir too.

@Mazza ... how long did you think about that before you had a solution to the problem.... I like it... what a great idea
Just imagine what Malc could invent if he got really bored:thumbsup:

Hi Trev.....I was just looking around the garage for something I could use and it just came to me. Luckily I had a bit of dowel or I’m not sure what I would have used for the handle.

I’m impressed Mate..... how long do you think it will be before you get your Z finished and back on the road?
I know you can’t get out and about with your lockdowns but it’ll be ready to go when you get the green light

To be honest Trev, if @Lee , @GazHyde , @Oldguysrule and @pgunter , (the guys from Zedshed HQ) turned up here, it would be back on the road in about an hour =))

I have got a couple of things on order, and an armrest being re coloured ( and now a new steering wheel :)) which will be here soon and then I could have it all back together in a couple of days, if I really got on with it, but I’m not rushing.
It would be nice to have it done by the end of the month though.

I had assumed when Jim posted that the steering wheel had sold that you were changing yours over. It will be bloody impressive once you’re done... it’ll be a credit to you Mate.

Bit of tidying today. Pulled the exhaust apart as it needs to be adjusted to fit properly when it goes back, but I did clean it:thumbsup:
6392A876-6124-4649-8662-97B6DA11387D.jpeg

Also cleaned and painted the spare wheel rack ( again:arghh:)
C422E310-32AB-4530-AD5A-B3B5B46265B8.jpeg

Also found a problem...
The gearbox drain nut is weeping.( not a lot but needs to be fixed) Cant see any cracks, and it is torqued correctly 50Nm
Is there any sealant I could use on the thread?
I rather drain it down and get the problem sorted than leave it, now I know.

I would wrap it with PTFE tape Malc. First clean and dry the plug, ideally clean the threaded hole as best you can. Wrap it in right hand thread direction.

Tony.

Thanks for that Tony,
I have just cleaned all round the plug and will check it again in a few hours to confirm it.
( but it was all clean about a week ago so fairly sure )

That’s a cheap fix as I have some ptfe tape. I’ll drain it down later and leave it over night and clean it all tomorrow and put the plug back.

First of my parcels turned up this morning :)
The Butyl Rubber strip to hold the inner door panel on.

Rubber strip easy enough to stick on, then the inner panel, and after making all the electrical connections , the door cards.

Also today sorted the gearbox drain plug.
Let it drain out until it stopped dripping
65B76EF4-ED71-4BAC-AC30-2203CF735866.jpeg

Then cleaned All the threads and took Tonys’ advice and used some ptfe tape, wound it back in and refilled the gearbox. Should know in a day or so if it’s worked.
