All the brake hoses now connected up so just the bleeding to do......but after reading Bentleys, plus the Sealey instructions, I am a bit confused..( actually totally confused....) ...does the ABS pump get bled or do you need some BMW gismo to be plugged into to the car?????
What happens if you dont have the gismo ??

Adding to my woes....these turned up so it means the dreaded C word..........Cleaning!!!!!!!!:arghh::arghh:

I've bled mine a few times now with no trouble. If you've got a pressure bleeder that will definitely help, ever since I got one I've wondered how I managed without. New fluid from a sealed container, preferably, as brake fluid sure does attract water. If you want to know how much it attracts it, fill a small cup with any you've got left over, and leave it somewhere safe for a couple of days, you'll find the cup overflowing.:wideyed: And water is not an acceptable fluid for brakes.

Calmly and methodically, just like everything else you've done. Start bleeding with the caliper furthest from the master cylinder, NSR for us, and work your way to the nearest. Be prepared to do it twice, it'll come as a bonus if you don't have to, and be prepared for the pedal to feel horrible to start with, there's an awful lot of new bits that need bedding in, and that can take a couple of hundred miles. Sometimes more. The handbrake will almost definitely need re-adjusting once it's been used a few times, gently pulling it on and letting it off a few times while driving the car sorts it. In a safe and responsible manner, of course, hurtling off and trying handbrake turns is NOT good practice.;)Even if it does feel entertaining.

The complete system will hold approx. 1ltr Malc so just keep an eye on your catch bottle to weigh up how much you've put through. After you've bled all 4 corners to the point of no more bubbles in the bleed pipe to catch bottle. Pump the brakes up and hold pressure on for a few seconds. Then bleed all 4 again watching for any bubbles in the pipe.

Tony.

I went for it today....and now have the Brakes and Clutch bled :):)

Didnt start well, as my reservoir fluid remover would hold the brake fluid. A bit disappointed with that as it did ok with water. Anyway found trigger spray. Removed the front spray nozzle and just used the trigger to pump out the reservoir into a jar. .
Wasn't quick, but it worked and managed to empty of all the old fluid.

Pretty filthy !!!!!!

Refilled the reservoir with nice clean new fluid, and hooked up the pressure bleeder. It said pump it to 10psi with the bleeder empty and check for leaks...........
Well there was one.......it was the the pressure gauge seal and it caused the fluid to be sucked back into the bleeder........Never having used one before went into Panic Mode......until I worked out where the problem was.

After tightening the gauge (screwed it in !!!!!!) pumped it up again to 10 psi and left it for 5 minutes. And it was still reading 10 psi.....so no leaks.
Released the pressure , filled it with about a litre and half of fluid.....and pumped it to 20 psi.

Then went round the 4 bleed valves in turn. ( in the right order !!)
Pumped the brake pedal....then did it all again........pumped the brake pedal and went round again ( just to make sure )
All good, and the brake pedal felt ok.

I was checking and topping up the Pressure back to 20 psi every time I did it.

Then climbed underneath and did the clutch........There was loads of air ....not sure why, but carried on and eventually the air cleared, . Checked the pedal and it felt crap!!!!! So pumped it a few times and it gradually came back to life. Then back underneath to bleed it a bit more.....no air....so tightened it and cleaned all round and put the cap back on. Checked the pedal again and it felt ok.

Tidied everything away, then went round and checked all the bleed valves and hose connections just to make sure
And all ok:thumbsup:

( I will go round them all tomorrow as well )

Got the exhaust positioned to make sure all ok.

The rear bracket is slightly wrong so had to modify it a bit.

Thats the best its going to be....I can centralise it but cant get it any higher in the aperture.

So that was it for today......I will get some paste and get the exhaust fixed properly tomorrow.

Then just the undertray ( after I’ve checked the clutch slave cylinder again tomorrow) ....spare wheel assembly and road wheels to put back on.

One thing that I was a bit concerned about was the brake hose union on the nearside trailing arm, next to the exhaust bracket that is bolted to the beam. The hose union bracket was just touching the rubber mount. But after a while I realised that when the car is back on its wheels the trailing arm will be raised and then they wont be touching.

@t-tony , the PTFE around the gearbox drain plug worked. Bone dry  :):) :)

Hey Malc, glad that worked for you mate. I learned that trick when I was a tractor mechanic.

Stopped in my tracks today for the want of two clips :arghh::arghh::arghh:

Took the cross bar off and cleaned it, wiped the underside, and started to put it all back. Then putting the rear undershield back on, there are two 10mm AF self tappers that hold the front and rear undershield to the cross bar, and one wouldn’t tighten.....the cause was the body nut was rusted.
Took the cross bar back off and pulled the body nut out , and although the other side looked better, pulled that out as well and have had to order replacements. (3.50 each )

I’ve taken the exhaust off again and cleaned up the connections, still need some paste to reinstall it properly.

Cant do anymore today.....just sitting on the garage floor with my ipad.

Could clean the seats I suppose and go round the rubber parts with the gummi phledge......but thats cleaning, so can wait till I can get the car on the drive.

Should be here in a day or so. Then I can get on :):)

Good....the postman delivered the parcel for the clips that I only ordered yesterday...great service and delivery....

Bad.....I ordered the wrong part :bashhead: What a plonker =))

On the upside they sent me 4 and I only ordered 2 and I am sure they will come in handy at some point....

Bit of a difference !!!!

But now I have to find the right number and get some :arghh:

Still I will have to wait for the new tyre anyway so no real problem.

I did think of starting the engine while its still on the axle stands but not sure. May leave it till its back on its wheels.

EDIT....just checked RealOem, and I ordered the part they say, but definitely not the part I need. !!!

Because the system holds 1 litre I put a 250ml mark on the catch jar and work to that point on each corner. So I don't stop when the fluid comes through clean/with no bubbles only when I hit 250ml.

Sorted.....

Looked on line and Halfords did a pack of 4 for 1.70, and had them in stock locally. ( About 3 minutes away)

So a necessary trip out,, and picked up a pack. Not allowed in the shop, and they had a till at the front door which was all protected, and the girl went and found the part.

So now , cross brace back on and under tray fitted and just need the rear wheels to go back on and then go round all the wheels with a torque wrench
2F88F21F-4CC4-4062-B1E9-CA3E04F89567.jpeg

And other than 10 wheel nuts and 20 chrome covers, I have nothing left in my parts trays.....:):)

Bored now......anyone want a refurb done ???????=))=))

Ooh yes please, so kind of you to offer! (lol). I’ve been following your thread with keen interest as I’ve got all this to do but not sure I have the capabilities. And now that you’re the acknowledged expert and all that......
And as for cleaning- my philosophy is ‘every minute spent cleaning a Zed is a minute not driving a Zed’. Cleaning is so clearly one of the pleasures in your life it would be a shame to deprive you of some more. Curse this lockdown or I would be there like a shot.....

Had the new tyre put on this morning, ( I got there, put the wheel on the floor, got back in the car and they came out, picked it up and sorted it out. )
and then came straight back home and put the rear wheels back on the car.

Then a drive........about 15 - 20 feet!!!!

Cant go on the road as no tax or insurance.

Two issues....Airbag warning light...even after a reset, it comes back on  Code reader says drivers side, but checked under the seat and all connected ????

Handbrake needs readjusting.....I followed the instructions in Bentleys....or at least I thought I did...just have to do it all again and hopefully get it right this time.

But at least its back on its wheels again:)
