Have you thought of extending the metal over the top of the filter as well Tony? The AFE version I have surrounds the filter, and the cover is removable to get access to the cone if needed.

Very impressed with your metal fabricating skills, nice tidy job all round

I'm going to make a top mate just waiting for some more sheet alloy.

Tony.

Now the scientific bit ;) I brought my lazer temp reader home from work today and when I backed the car into the garage I put the bonnet up straight away to help prevent heat soaking all over the engine bay. Here's what I found using this,
From phone 006.jpg

The oil filter housing was showing 88.8 deg.C.
From phone 001.jpg

The side of the heat shield nearest the Ramair showed 39.6 deg. C.
From phone 002.jpg

The Ramair body showed 33.4 deg. C.
From phone 003.jpg

The bracket from the oil filter housing showed 65.2 deg. C.
From phone 004.jpg

While the end of the mounting bobbin inside the shield showed only 31.8 deg. C.
From phone 005.jpg

As a control of sorts the car bodywork showed 26.8 deg. C.
From phone 007.jpg

So, I'm fairly happy that the air going into the induction will be kept cooler with the shield in place. Next thing is to look into scooping more cold air from the kidney grille area and test again, then fabricate a top and maybe close a gap or two as well and see what effect that has too.

Well that's some temperature difference, this can only be a good thing so your handy work with the heat shield does work .

I've got one of those infra red thermometers, use it for finding cold spots on radiators, it's also excellent for winding up customer's cats when you wave the red dot about :ymdevil:;).

And people ! =)) Very useful for find which brake is getting hot(ter) and tracing the flow of a cooling system when you've got air locks etc.

Yep, I think it's worth continuing with Steve.

Shame that bracket from the engine side to the filter shield is a good conductor of heat, Anyway Tony that's a great bit of info and will help people decide wether it's worth closing the filter in. I'm also wondering what the temp is when actually driving along at say 40mph with the air circulating around the engine bay, got to be cooler surely. How much would that great piece of equipment you used cost.
All we need to do now is test some .org Zs with different setups( i.e. like Bozzy's ) to see how they compare. This is what modifying is all about, love it. Thanks Tony really interesting post.

When I bought that kit it was £50 ish but they're much less expensive these days. I've had that one 15 years Roy.

I can insulate the stay bar by using an 8mm threaded bobbin at the filter housing Roy. I'll get one.

A little job for tomorrow if all goes to plan, first nip to Marshall's Yard in Gainsborough to Car Phone Whatehouse for A 32gb memory card then get this fitted (rear view) before next weekend. So if you're behind me, behave ! ;)

So, dash cam fitted in the N/S roll hoop as last year. I'm struggling to find something to mount it on the outside of my Wind deflector panel which has enough adjustment to get it to film the road behind and not the sky ;) I followed this truck home tonight, foreign plates and boy he was not hanging around, 60 mph on a single carriage way A road? I was under the impression they were restricted to 50 on these roads and 60 on Dual carriage ways and Motorways? @Grumps.

I was under impression your restricted to 60mph on that bit of road, and if he was doing 60 you passed him at 75- then going on into the 80s IMO. That camera takes decent vid, but you really should be looking where your going not where your coming from.=))
