Excellent write up Tony and the blue light is very subtle .
I have a blue light bulb in my interior light but it sends my eyes funny when it comes on in the dark :wacky:.
Still not fitted those footwell lights I bought from you ages ago .
Easily remedied young Albert ;)

At the beginning of last week I had to change the bulb in my O/S indicator side repeater light, when I removed the light unit to change the bulb I was quite surprised to see only one 501 capless bulb that was mounted to one side of the light unit. No wonder they're a little dim.
As the day wore on a plan emerged to make an improvement to these lights. Searching on eBay I found these pre-wired bulb holders for £3.60 inc. P&P

I found that 15mm copper pipe was an ideal push fit for these rubber bulb holders and I cut a couple of pieces 17mm long.

The light units just needed another hole drilling at the opposite side to allow the copper tube to be glued in place.

030.jpg

I used a step drill but could only get to within one size of where I needed to be because of the length of the drill bit (care required here) and I ended up enlarging the hole with a Dremmel type tool. The light units are fairly shallow.

031.jpg

I super glued some Ford sump plug sealing rings onto the copper tube to allow it to keep the tube at the correct height till the JB Weld set hard overnight. They can be left on there anyway.

The rubber bulb holders come with about 4" of cable pre-wired and I spliced these into the original bulb wiring.

032.jpg

The blue and yellow wire is the positive and the brown the earth wire (it is not too big a deal how you connect these as the LEDs are polarity sensitive and you would just need to turn it 180 deg if it didn't light up).

A couple of laps of insulation tape on each wire,

033.jpg

Then round all the wires together.

034.jpg

I fitted some amber coloured LED style bulbs in each holder, £3.49 inc P&P (4)

See what a perfect fit the bulb holders are in the copper tube.

Cost of LEDs and bulb holders £7.09p

In the video you can see the improvement in light output at 10 seconds after the second bulb is introduced.

Another little video showing 10 sec. of 1 501 normal bulb (very yellow), 10-21 sec. of 1 amber LED and 21-30 sec. of 2 amber LED (much more orange colour).

A very satisfactory modification for me as it gets very difficult exiting our works car park as dark nights arrive in a couple of weeks.

Most non Z affectionados will not even know that they are indicators and will think that you are driving a fairground attraction.

The design of the side reps has always made me wonder how effective they are viewed from side on. They are entirely dependent on the bodywork reflecting the light - a bit of a problem on dark colours when the car is mucky (not that some get like that ).
Then I noticed how poor side reps are on lots of other cars, especially the door mirror mounted ones. Form over function and all that.
Nice mod
