Neither my original nor replacement boot lids had the engine size on. Nor my 1.9 actually. All pre-facelifts.

Did the engine size badges only start appearing on facelift cars? 🤔
All the facelift cars I've owned had the engine size badge - 1.9i, 2.2i and 3.0i.

Only 1 of the facelift cars I've owned had the engine size badge and with the paperwork for the car was an invoice from the supplying BMW dealer for the supply and fitment of said badge - not surprisingly it was a 2.8 badge.

Removing badges from panels is best done with Carp braid, it's multi filament, whereas mono filament line will break easily when it heats up cutting through the adhesive tape. That doesn't happen with braid.

Dental floss works ..especially if you don’t have any carp braid to hand 😁

Loads of effort but no further forward:arghh:

Trying to remove all this bloody silicon that someone used is a nightmare !!

But how ever long it takes it has to be removed :thumbsup: so I can get a good seal when I put the new butyl strip round.

I used Goo Gone if you're really stuck (excuse the pun) and need to try something else. It worked really well

getting there but still some to remove … don’t want to take the chance of it leaking so making sure all the traces of the crap silicon sealant are removed before put the butyl strips on

I did notice that on RealOem the description is 15mm x 1.5mm which is quite thin … I have 20 x 2mm grey butyl which I thought was going to be too thin after seeing the crap that mine was smothered in… I’m sure most people put 6mm dia as they use on the doors but who knows what is. correct !!!! =))=))


I have cleaned the lower part of the roof

and I also have a fabric sealant that I will treat it with as well before fitting it back to the car

In short by applying the 'protector' you prevent water getting to the waterproof membrane which, in time, dries out, cracks and leaks. These roofs are not supposed to be 'proofed' by design. The rain keeps the waterproof membrane supple.

A step forward today :)

Got the plastic bow set in….
used the grey butyl 20 x 2 mm, but used two layers ….
Put the first layer so it ran round the back of the car just level with the two drain holes either side …peeled off the backing and put another on top but left some longer lengths of backing.
Put the bow in place and put the 4 screws in just to locate the position…. ( checked every one of the other holes for alignment =))=)))
Then carefully pulled out the backing tape and from the centre working out pushed the bow onto the butyl strip…

To make it easier I used the kitchen roll holder with a new kitchen roll to support the butyl and moved it as I worked my way round … :thumbsup: worked ok !!!!!

Enough left to do the same to the roof … once I work out where it needs to go :whistle::whistle:

On your second picture you will see 2 faint lines above the holes, that's where the butyl goes.

I thought the bow had to go in first before mounting the frame on the studs ???:angelic:

If I remember correctly, frame bolts in first and tightened, fit the bow but leave the bolts loose, latch the catches at the front, then tighten the bow bolts starting at the centre and work outwards down both sides.
