Actually did some work today…. But only making space for myself…..
A bit of free MDF from a mate, 5 casters from Toolstation and some nuts and bolts from Wickes…. And I now have somewhere to store, and move when I need to, the set of wheels and tyres picked up from @Rha last week. Plus my other spare tyre on top !!!

That's a great idea Malc. Toolstation supplied me with castors for my portable work bench and the shop vacuum. These can be rolled round to the shed on a Shed day out of the way.

I also stack all the pit boards on a running barrow to put them outside too.

Today was the first day for ages that I spent a lot of time on the car….

Started by cleaning the threads on the diff bolts and also ran a tap through the diff threads. Wouldn’t have to do this if I had a decent Nugger Nugger gun…. But time is not an issue …..
Result was they all did up finger tight easily before I actually torqued them up.

C345D329-6468-4BC9-930D-096402421E45.jpeg

So with that part done torqued up the beam/diff, drive shaft/diff and trailing arm/beam….. but had to hit my speeddial to ask Lee a question….. so good having experts on tap !!!!

Screwed the beam studs back in …. And the car bit me when using two spanners to get some additional torque … I slipped :arghh:

D9E1F9A6-FBD6-4E01-BD04-1E2F19D9E47C.jpeg

But medicine quickly applied….

19A41E11-6525-4141-8878-BF35B45225FA.jpeg

( not Fosters as Tesco doing a special offer on Carlsberg=)))

Then just went through all the other bits and pieces trying to remember how they go…
Put some parts on the beam and also assembled the rear shocks ( including the top support plates I picked up from @Rha last week
667C8D62-401F-422B-B1D5-86E686447790.jpeg

Haven’t put them in the car yet as you need a ‘Gaz’ to do it properly !!!!=))
And not like I did last time on the 1.9 … forget to tighten the two main top nuts up:whistle:
( which ….Lee diagnosed the problem over a telephone call after I explained the symptoms)

So sorted through all the new brackets and fixings etc and started putting them in the right postions ( hopefully) but I am missing a couple of clips so will order those on Monday.

63E51A50-B617-4A31-9BFB-638D92C171A0.jpeg

certainly helps building it up on a trolley as I can move it easily and will be able to push it into position later when its time to put it back in the car .

As I said to Lee earlier, its been like a proper Zedshed day here in the Bognor Lean-to….. ……..except for the speed, the skill and no breakfast bar:arghh::arghh::arghh:

That subframe assembly looks outstanding.

The hard work is essentially done. The car will fly back together very easily after this.

Another day in the Lean-to….. and a bit more done.
Brake lines and ARB installed on the trailing arms. All tightened / torqued up , plus checked all the fixings to ensure nothing missed.
4E42E615-2D8D-4748-9692-FDAFCDEA0E94.jpeg

Turns out I am missing two cable clips….. which are Obsolete ( ref BMW) and the brake sensor lead I thought I had one but was for the front so ordered one on Ebay (£9.99). ( BMW £15.62 plus vat !!!! )
Also need an M10 nyloc nut for the diff bush as it says replace it.. (EDIT.....diff nut is M12:whistle:)

All the other fixings are sorted ( either cleaned or new). So this Assy pretty much sorted.

Got given a present this morning as a mate said he’s too old to be working on cars now and thought I would find a use for them..!!!
27B94A39-82B0-4232-9B8C-84EC2224BE8D.jpeg

That makes 4 Jacks and 12 axle stands now =))
Plus he’s 5 years younger than me  and he’s too old ??

Already started amassing surplus parts
2 rear Meyle drop links, and a new BMW trailing arm brake line.
AF776D79-A1CD-40CC-A861-43957E4AB424.jpeg

Then a heartstopping moment when a delivery van dropped off a parcel.,.,
98914079-15A9-44D0-9B6F-4D005FFE9E73.jpeg

It looked like a Tank Strap box…. Had someone returned a set…….:arghh::arghh::arghh:
Oh no !!… someone not happy with them????

Fortunately not a disgruntled customer…... I ordered a Keyboard Case last week and forgot all about it=))=))=))

Then just a bit if tidying round the rear bulkhead at the fuel tank access.
There had been a bit if surface rust which I had treated so just blew it over….
18371872-09A1-448E-87DD-CF28A88327B0.jpeg

seem to have lots of these boxes to use as masking:whistle:

If Carlsberg did car spraying….. probably better than my effort!!!=))
63FB51D2-1DD7-4A17-979D-32C831155DD6.jpeg

But ok and its under the carpet anyway
515A2896-6771-4551-8542-013F04338AD9.jpeg

That was it for today…. Not a giant leap forward…. But if I can spend 3 or 4 days a week on it, Then hopefully won't be too long before I can actually get behind the wheel:happy:

The ones that clip on to these studs. Got double clips on the other side as two wires but this side only has the abs cable so not sure if they are singles or still doubles as the other side.
Andy ( Spurs) is checking to see if he has any.
I also found another part number, ( 63121364431) which is listed as being used on the Z3M, but don’t think its the same type but ordered a couple and will see if they are any good when I pick the up tomorrow

Not working on the car today ( today is ‘drain the bank account day’ or as some say ‘seeing the grandchildren’)

But picked up the clips today from BMW
Part number 63121364431.
And they are ok for the nearside cable.

They clip on to the studs ok and hold the wire

8EAEA50E-03B2-4DB2-AEAE-B12EF4BD25D0.jpeg

These are used on Z3M’s so I have now the authority to add an ‘M’ badge
I ended up getting 4 so these two will go in surplus box !!!

also bought the diff support Nut ( M12 x 1.5 self locking ) part number 07129900047, @ £0.85 plus vat.
Same nut on ebay ….. £3.30 ea !!!! ( but free postage !!!!!=)))

Just waiting for the brake pad wear sensor cable and thats the subframe ready:happy:

The sum total of todays efforts.....
283E25B1-35BA-45C8-A0F3-45BCB785BDD8.jpeg

That was to add the wear sensor as it turned up this morning...
But it was too hot to do much more in the garage, even with the door open:whistle:
But that is now a complete assy and just needs to be lifted into position.....but just one or two bits underneath to complete then it can go back in.

But distracted in a nice way, as getting lots of interest in the tank straps from across the Pond
One set currently on its way to Denver, and another in transit to San Diego…. Plus two more enquiries that I’m sorting out now. ( these all being the Z3M version as they all seem to have the lower canister on whether an ‘M’ or not.

Oh….and I had to book a Speed Awareness Course…. ooops !!!! :arghh: :arghh: :arghh: :arghh:

. . . . . Oh….and I had to book a Speed Awareness Course….
I did one of them a couple years ago. Only good thing about it is the free tea and biscuits.

The course is NOT about being aware if your speed. The course is about how to figure out what the speed limit actually is.

Here's one. You're on a nice wide road in the middle of nowhere. No speed limits in force but you're doing a nice safe 50 or so. Not a building in sight. It's night time but, you think you just went past a lamp post and there's another coming up on the other side. Still middle of nowhere. No buildings. Are you speeding? Y/N

I’d day yes, if there are lampposts and no other visual clues then you have to assume it’s 30mph limit

I think she might have. My car is fitted with an audible warning instrument which says, “Watch your speed Al.” On that occasion it failed and I told them that it was her fault on the course, so the least Maxine could do is make a cup of tea.
