Go round and torque everything, which I have a list to tick off . Refit the propshaft....Although.....was also thinking of taking out the gearbox to check the clutch....and possibly do the selector pins......but not sure if I have the courage or the skill to do it :eek:. Plus the gearbox is really heavy....and dont want it dropping on me

I would like to get all the wiring sorted so I can get the carpets back in....and re fit some of the interior , just to get some of the parts out of the way.

Leave it mate enjoy the victory of what you've achieved so far. Now everything has been on/off next time round the gearbox will be out within a few hours.

Great start to the day…… cant get the rear part of the propshaft fitted…. So anyone …. If I take off the front end of the propshaft…. Do I unbolt such that the guibo comes off or unbolt it leaving the guibo connected to the gearbox??

What exactly is the problem @Mazza?
I attached the guibo to the propshaft first before installing the propshaft. Then you can simply let the propshaft sag a little and attach it to the gearbox and the differential flange the same time.

And don't forget that the overall length of the drive shaft can be changed in the middle (on a spline).

Great project, it's really a joy to see all the progress mate! Your Z3 will be pristine once you're finished

The front end is already attached and theres not enough give to get the other end through the beam

But you have answered by saying you attach the guibo to the prop first…. So I’ll disconnect the front end from the gearbox leaving the guibo attached to the prop.

but not today…. Need to go and get an 18mm ring spanner…. And a 22mm one while I’m at it !!!!
Might as well have all the set =))

Actually the guibo disk shouldn't be mounted any other way. According to BMW repair instructions and the manufacturer's specifications, the screws must always be inserted from the guibo side and screwed with the nuts on the flange in order to avoid tension. If you leave the guibo on the gearbox, then you won't have enough space to put the screws through from the correct side.

Here's a Internet picture of how it should look. Most people don't care though. Good luck, shouldn't be much of a problem!

Long day in the Lean-to today….. and filled it with all sorts of things!!!

First job was to install the propshaft…
Found some marks at the centre splined joint so bit of grease and it went in really smoothly
3F2AF3E8-CB7E-4F79-BB8F-B10AA5614C1A.jpeg

Then sorted out the guibo and it turns out there are arrows all round the edge indicating which way the bolt goes. The guibo itself was in good condition so no point replacing it.

7971229F-E845-4D6F-AE5C-F4EEE69AD206.jpeg

After a bit of a struggle , managed to get both ends where they had to go and put the centre bearing bracket nuts on and it was secure.
Then just a matter of torquing the front end bolts ……..and then used @Lee ’s tried and tested method to tighten the diff end nuts. Cant get a socket on it, so a spanner , with a second one linked on to it , and tighten as far as you can before breaking wind……
…..After getting changed I had a cup of tea

Front end with bolts round the right way

While underneath I realised I hadn't removed all the heat shields, and some of the fixings were rusty so sprayed and carefully removed them so the stud didnt snap off, and gave the lot a clean.

some have got over large holes so I will pick up some large Ali washers for when they go back. Got 10 new body nuts plus the better ones taken off, should be ok to reassemble them.

….. Tonight Matthew I’m going to be Trev from Zedshed HQ………..=))
59153DCA-D95F-4C22-B4D2-97BB8EF8B9F4.jpeg

With a wire brush on an electric drill I cleaned all the heat shield studs and surrounding area…Then a fine Picasso finish in gloopy gloop.
Once was enough for me, and Trev get this on almost every car through the Zedshed:eek:
Needed to stand up for a bit so grabbed all the boot carpets ,which were filthy, and washed them all.

This is a courgette plant just behind the garage……camouflaging a car part…

Bumper crop this year…

Back underneath and swapped out the fuel filter.

Only a bit of fuel in the filter ( probably half the cars value !!!!)
Must do this on the 1.9 sometime:thumbsup:

Forgot about this…. Front nearside has a stud broken, so will have to drill out and put a 3mm insert in.
FAE0D254-13B3-4856-8FAD-248BA38730DB.jpeg

Put the access cover back in place and made sure the rubber gasket was sealing properly.

If I can get all the wiring sorted , then the carpets can go back,
A12D49C5-D52B-432D-9A00-443FFEDD6574.jpeg

but not going to be a quick job:arghh:
One bit of luck…. Wing mirrors… Passenger one can be refurbed
904D644B-DB53-4882-8F8D-2A500D34B472.jpeg

mechanism ok and I have silver plastic covers which can be sprayed…..
Drivers side…..

Dead!!!!
But I have my old silver one that with a bit of a refurb and spray will be ok :happy:

That was all for today….but have a plan of action for Friday ( tomorrow Rockstar rehearsal) ……:beer:beer:beer:beer

Looking really good Malc, you're nearly there, well, you're closer to the end of the project than the beginning;)

Early start this morning… I had a look at the boot mats and thought they could do with another cleaning session ( sounding like @andyglym now😱😱😱)
:arghh:
B8AF8115-C4A4-4B10-BABF-2B75E16396A7.jpeg

Remembered I have a carpet cleaner so used it to give them another clean and left them to dry in the sun. ( I had to find the book to find out how it worked  )

Then all the ali heat shields reinstalled with new body nuts and oversize washers
EB9061DB-2ACC-4C2C-9EF4-24A0E7CCD9CA.jpeg

Ebay wanted £2.05 per disc, so bought a length of 40mm wide ali strip (2mm thick ) and made some with a 38mm hole saw.
Worked fine and all the heat shields back on.

Then started on the wiring….
Sorted the passenger side first
68321091-708C-4C54-9DA3-908A2B584C06.jpeg

Had to clip a new speaker cable to the loom. Original speaker wiring has been cut and new wires laying around in the car, so need to tidy them all up as I go.
Have no idea why the originals have been cut off as they still appear to be ok ( buzzed them with a meter)
Then taped up the loom and put all the fixings back.

Drivers side had some rusty bits, so wire brushed them and painted with a white rust primer/sealer.
Could have left it like that …after all its under the carpet….. But decided to waste more time and another £10 and sprayed it blue.
FC38B3C2-B74D-4C98-BF43-C8F05DB95D02.jpeg

Leaving that overnight and will secure the loom tomorrow similar to the passenger side.

But the centre wiring…..:arghh::eek::eek::eek:
I am moving the roof switch to the front so will have to undo loom taping to release the wires so it can be re routed. I was going to move the ASC switch to the rear but realised there are 4 spaces on the front switch panel , ie roof, ASC, and two heated seat switches . ( being added …. ). So no need to shift it .
Again this will be a sat morning job

By now boot carpets dry
So might as well put them back in the boot.
3E4F1A25-14B0-4210-B7F8-E33C2671094D.jpeg

A lot cleaner:thumbsup:… just need 5 more of the black studs to secure them.
Its a shame it has that box bit on the left and isn’t the std one. Was that for a CD changer?

Now its time for ….
What the hell are these for?????
No prizes !!!

One of these under each seat…
E3CCE707-4688-490D-8E9A-9E57DD3D2EB2.jpeg

No idea on this … dont remember it being connected to anything —- in the centre console area.

no idea … centre console area
7635B6F4-0FAF-4BE3-9256-CB75460158FD.jpeg

There were a bunch that I know were not connected to anything so taped them all together.

Then as I was tiding up saw this… must have fallen out of something

any help greatly appreciated

Well :scorecard: For the heat shield washers, had same problem on my old Z3 and the only big washers I had just about held shields. Love the clean look of the boot. I also had some wires spare after fitting a new sound system to my Z3 and now think I should have labelled them for the next owners. Can't help you with the ones you have spare but think if all is working ok then just insulate them and tuck em away. You certainly have made great progress recently, keep it up Malc, soon be finished.

I have the same on my 2.2 (currently at ZedShed HQ). The HK amp lives behind that hump and the CD changer was mounted below it.
