Guys, another question on this.... does software which can be downloaded for these devices enable you to reset the SRS light [in case I activate it in the future] or is a separate tool required for that?
I know other posts talk about the SRS reset tools which are cheap but it would be a waste to get one if it can be done with the above mentioned items and good software.

Ok, I've tried all the suggestions, thank you very much guys but still no joy.
I tried it on our 2002 Galaxy and it worked straight away without any need for changing up address.
So I know the wifi adaptor works but just doesn't like my 98 Z3...
Will give it one more go from scratch tomorrow and if still no joy I think I will order the following:BMW & Mini C110 Diagnostic Code Reader 1997-2011 models - Airbag, ABS, Engine & Transmission

Just to add I tried EODB Facile. Works fine on the Galaxy but cannot connect to my Z3.
Must be something to with its age being a 1998 model.

It should work Dino, our cars are the same age, where are you located, if not too far we could meet up and try my set up?

Great news dino that you can connect to the galaxy, this proves that the wifi link and your phone are all talking to each other, have you had any other type of diagnostic device on your car?

I'm down in Canterbury, Kent.

My local garage can reads fine on it I believe (they reset my airbag light before I bought a tool),
Am busy getting the car ready to go back on road and I suspect one of the camsensors is failing so want to diagnose problem before changing. I'm sure I'll get my £98 worth of use out of the code reader...

The wifi adaptor is great for the Galaxy and should be useful for friends and family cars all of which are newer than my Z3

I had HUD on my 535d and it was great, it is amazing how much you ignore it when looking ahead but then how it is always there when you look at it.

I tried to photo it but it is difficult.

We have it on our peugeot too.
But don't know if anyone experienced the aftermarket part.

I got a bluetooth ELM327 and the Dashcommand software for my Android phone to try things out. Initially I was impressed but now see it as a waste of money [only $20 total]. As described above most of the sensors are not registered but it allows you to manually enter sensors somehow - a bit too technical for me. It records in Racetrack mode but often drops out and in playback mode will go into DEMO mode even though this has been disabled in settings. In the Diagnostics section it only picks up 2 sensors one being the cam. Like @zedonist mentioned above it uses the phone's sensors quite well for G forces and such.

If anyone is familiar with additional setup using Dashcommand and Android can you please assist me in getting a few other sensors and issues sorted?

HELP...
Some time back I took a good look at the diagnostics advice on here and rushed out and bought an ELM327 (USB) , a 20 pin to OBD11 adapter and tried to get the beast going. My enthusiasm went ahead of my knowledge!!!
The little disc with the ELM unit has been loaded on my ancient laptop (Windows XP) but all I get when connected up is "Interface not recognised".
Am I missing something here?
Is there a way to test the ELM 327. I'm sure it's made in China...

I've also now got a Samsung GT-S5 mobile phone and wonder if I buy a bluetooth ELM327 version whether this would be a better alternative.
I've already downloaded an OBD Android link off Google Playstore but am not sure where to go from here.
Any ideas?

I have the S4 and a cheap ELM327 from China. I am now suspecting that the elm is crappy and intermittent as it sometimes connects, then doesn't, or won't connect at all using 3 different types of software. I think I will just bin it and do some more research on here and buy what I KNOW 100% will work. Interestingly the EODB Facile software highly recommended does not list my car! Doesn't mean it won't work but I am not going to take the chance.

Just ordered this gear too. Wifi dongle and ODB2 to 20pin adapter. Will use the Dash command app and see how it works with the S50 engine :writing: Thanks for all the info guys.

Guys, feel for you, I don't have such issues with mine, it has proven to be worth every penny for me and a couple of other forum members I have helped, so has paid back already.

It is never going to replace a dedicated system, and some things are gimmicks. That said, the other thing to bear in mind is that the Z3 is an old car, and it is limited on the number of modules that can be read on any system, but for engine diagnostics the elm device is adequate.

It's also worth noting that no diagnostic system can tell you what is wrong, but only tell you where the fault is coming from, you then have to do some leg work to examine that system to prove which part is at fault.

Ok guys, this is a screenshot of which sensors Torque Pro will identify in a 2001 Z3 2.2i. The ELM device is fitted in the OBD2 connector in the driver's knee panel trim area. Seems like it is working fine now. I am using a Samsung Galaxy S2, a S4, and a Galaxy Tab 10.1 all working well with Torque. I do have a specific question for @zedonist but that will be in the next post.

@zedonist can you please clarify something for me? I cannot find an answer to this despite reading lots of posts - it's getting very confusing. Here is is big fella!

First one: Is there different information provided through the OBD2 in the driver's kick panel area compared with the 20 pin connector under the bonnet, or is exactly the same information AVAILABLE from both.

Second one: Can the software that is available such as 'EOBD Facile' be used to capture all the really important sensors and if so, from which or both ports as per above?

Third one: Which of the dedicated scanning devices mentioned in this post good at capturing all the important sensors that are helpful for mechanical troubleshooting?

Thanks.

Hi Cooper, I can only answer for the earlier Z3 and that is you can only read all accessible modules through the under bonnet connection (round), and that you are limited to engine only from the cockpit obd2 (square).

I would suggest that you run the software in both locations and compare what is and is not available, I only have the round connector on my Z3 so cannot help.

I use EOBD Facile and Dash Command for diagnostic codes, as I always like acsecond opinion. I then put the codes into an app called fault codes which tells me the system and possible root causes, I then test the components in the system to find the actual fault, no other way I am afraid even if you used INPA the process is the same.

If you want capture all sensors then you will need INPA and a laptop. This thread is about an alternative because my laptop broke, and the need to find a cheaper alternative. This works for me so far. Hope that helps?
