okay dashcommand screen grabs:

Inital thoughts - as easy to connect as before (with Rev) - but much easier to use and far more responsive / less lag... but not data export...

however, with all of these one slightly wonders about acuracy - it reported forward and lateral acceleeration, roll and pitch - yet the car was standing still - so totally in the movement of the phone - to be accurate you will need to calibrate and then lock the phone in situ...

In order to export to a csv you need to download a free copy of their scanxl, this allows you to view and then export to csv, down side you need a PC to do this.

After reading a fair bit, the time lag is down to the number of sensors that are being monitored and the power of your phone or tablet, it advises to create your own bespoke dashboards and swith off PID monitors that you don't want. There is also the possibility of changing the communication rate to the dongle so that it does not time out and drop the connection.

I like dashcommand, however it's the lack or difficulty to extract data that lets it down.

Come on Frankie keep it on topic ;)
There were times way back in school when my sense of humor got the best of me and caused me to laugh at the funny side of things. But 'way down deep inside me, a little voice cried out: "don't let all this go over your head. you know its important. You'll be sorry you didn't pay closer attention." And that's the way I feel now. Perhaps its difficult to apply myself to this as I'm not using the car, I don't have the instrumentation or electronics and I'm not sitting in the same classroom with you. But I know I'll be pouring over all this information at a not to much later date trying to make heads or tails of it to try to get the best result in performance that you are now trying to do. My hat's off to you. I'll try to catch up as soon as I can. Frankie

Quick update from me with the Lemur setup. I got a converter to the round connector from fleabay and it does not like it. The unit powers up and the phone connects to it but the app is unable to connect with the power light on the device going out after this point.

I think i need to try another connector to be sure that isn't the issue. I bout the lemur unit specifically for my S10 which it works well on so only a loss on the cable if it won't work on the z

Well I tried to capture some data at Cadwell park but with no real success. I had attached the adaptor to the underside of the strut brace to stop it freely moving around, the movement in the engine somehow dislodged the adaptor mid session which is not so good, on top of this I then lost communication with the unit due to excessive heat build up so my 74min data file only had 2 lines of data in it, Doh!

I will revisit the mounting position soon and let you know how I get on.

That's a shame Brian, I used gaffer tape and put it in the left hand rear corner of the engine bay as you look at it from the front, so no heat can get to it.

I've also got Dashcommand an the wifi dongle thing.
Used the cable from the airbag reset tool and it doesn't work - the app tries to connect and the lights flash on the wifi dongle but ultimately fails to connect.
Am getting the cable that someone else linked on here from Amazon and will report back (98 Z3 2.8 with the round pin in engine bag only).

Hope somebody can help.
I got the new cable which adapts the 20 pin round plug to the rectangular plug needed for the EML wifi adaptor.
I still have the same issue as with the other cable- the EML works but the app say 'Cannot detect OBD11 protocol'

I notice that the plug ha 20 pins but on the car side there are only 9 pins.
Is the issue with my car (1998 Z3 2.8).
I do not see the newer style OBD11 port under my dash. Just the round pin under the hood.

Have you selected the device in you Wi-Fi settings?, mine comes up as a CLK device.

If you have the exact same as above in the first post in this thread (cable and box) then certainly on my car (2001 3.0lt) I plugged it in - selected the new wifi network from the settings on the iphone and then loaded the software... it did once give me an error but I just pressed the connection button and it connected...

if you only have 9 pins on the round connector on the back passenger side of the engine bay then is maybe a different connector...?

I will crack mine open later, this will confirm exactly what is what, if all the cables are the same then it comes down to the wifi connection, which Brian indicated above you need to connect to the dongle as if it is a router through your wifi settings on ipad and then open the software and click connect.

Hi Guys, Excuse me for wandering into your conversation that I have been monitoring for interest sake.....

I am a newby and want to do my own servicing so I suppose I will need my own reset tools. Can someone please tell me specifically what I will need? Information you will probably require:
My vin is LL73078, 2001 2.2i, europe version. M54B22.
I don't know where the pin connector is located.
I hope that these devices are not too expensive :)
If you have any other advice it will be appreciated.

Hi guys, thanks for the tips.

I think it may be a cable issue as I'm connecting via the dongle's wifi ok. The app knows it's there and the lights flash but it fails to connect saying 'cannot detect OB11 protocol'.
This makes me think that it's the type of cable and the way it handles the old style OBD1 of my car to an output that the new OBD11 can actually read.

Have ordered the one you say zedonist and will try it when it arrives in a couple days.

Service reset tools are really cheap.....you can do it with a simple wire.
There are other threads on that.
The pin connector is located next to the fuse box and water reservoir (left hand side in the motor compartment by the windscreen).
It's a round (+/- 10cm diameter) "tube", with a screw on lid.

Via The google-play-store on android and the torque app, I got to this:
http://torque-bhp.com/wiki/Bluetooth_Adapters
A comparison of the different bluetooth adaptors available
As Torque is an app on android and android needs bleutooth, IOS needs wifi - so not much on the wifi-adaptors.

The note that the Chinese reproductions can be of lower quality is something I do believe.

The 2 cables I have tried thus far only have 5 pins wired up as pictured.
Will see what the 3rd cable looks like when it arrives and report back if it works.
