Dino,

I am convinced that you connection issue is between your iPhone and the adaptor and not the link wire.

I will have a look tomorrow and try and put together a cheat sheet for you.

Cheers

Brian

Hi Brian,
I think so to seeing that the cables are the same.

Thanks for the help!

Other thing is that my adapter could be faulty as it is the Chinese made version referred to in the comparison link but need to give another go before exchanging it I think.

Many thanks,
Dino

Well let's start with the basics and work up now we know the cable is correct.

Do you have an iPhone / ipad with a wifi dongle or a Bluetooth dongle?

iPhone & Ipad will only work with a wifi dongle, android devices will only work with Bluetooth devices.

If you can provide the answer to the above plus which App you are trying to use we can then look at connection and setup

Dino,

Hopefully some of the following may help. (if you know this already I apologise but just going back to basics). This information is for Apple iPhone (iPad should be the same though).

  • Connect your round 20 pin adaptor cable to your OBD port.
  • Plug in your Wi-Fi adaptor
  • A red light should flash on the adaptor, this will happen at all times, even if the ignition is turned off

  • On your iPhone (iPad) goto >Settings >Wi-Fi and look at the list provided, Select the Wi-Fi adaptor shown in the list.
  • My Wi-Fi Adaptor is listed as CLKDevices, the blue tick by the left hand side of the device shows I have an active connection to the unit. By clicking on the information symbol on the right hand side I can see the adaptor settings, my Wi-Fi adaptor came configured with an IP address of 192.168.0.10, AFAIAA this is non configurable. Using DHCP the Wi-Fi adaptor has issued my iPhone with an IP address of 192.168.0.11.
  • If you have no blue tick then this is your problem, you could try some manual settings in the static tab but we will deal with that if that is your issue.

  • The steps above can be done with the cars ignition turned off, once communication with the Wi-Fi adaptor has been established you will then be able to use one or more of the apps available. Note: You will need the ignition turned to position II to be able to communicate with the modules on the car.

Hi guys,
The new cable arrived so tried with that and same issue.
I'm using Dashcommand.

I think I've done it all as per your guide Brian:

Address is fixed as far as I can see.

This is the error I have had on all 3 cables.

I've looked for a port under the dash of car but don't see one, just the one in the engine bay (which I've used before to reset the airbag light).

@Dino D

Under your wifi setting on your phone, not sure why you have wifi in the search domains? Can you remove this? Usually done by pressing forget this network and starting again.

I also have DashCmd and the settings in the app are as follows:-

Connection

Auto connect = 30 seconds
OBD-II Interface type = ELM
OBD-II data port = AUTO
Aux input type = None
Aux Input only = Switch is set to off

My software is v4.1.1 (build 4234)

Cheers

Brian

Edit: what does the app say when you press the help button when the error pops up?

There is reference I believe in documentation that it expects to find your device on 192.168.0.11
which was automatic for me, and seemingly for Brian as well...
but your settings show your device at 192.168.0.150
an adhoc / internal network is based on 192.168.0.xxx if a device can search to see you, or in the communication your device can tell it your ip address then it shouldn't matter, but if the device is hardcoded to expect to find your device on 192.168.0.11 then it simply will not talk...

step 1 - as Brian suggests, forget network and then reconnect - see what happens
step 2 - if still not working, set it up manually - go to static and set it up as now for subnet / router / DNS - but for IP type in 192.168.0.11

see what happens
if that is not working - download an alternative OBD app (there are some free ones) and test...
otherwise it could be a faulty wifi unit

Hi Brian, Kirk,

Not sure why it says 'wifi' in Search Domains. I've tried erasing it manually and forgetting network but it remains.

Will try as you suggest Alasdair and see.

For information: My app settings are like yours.

The help setting in the app advises as follows:
1. Check DashCommand settings - is the OBD-II interface type set properly?

2. Check DashCommand settings - is the OBD-II data port set correctly? (Or use 'AUTO')

3. Did you plug your OBD-II hardware interface into the vehicle and turn it on?

4. Is the OBD-II hardware interface getting power from the vehicle? Check your fuses.

5. Have you enabled WiFi and/or Bluetooth?

6. Have you joined the correct WiFi network and/or paired with the correct Bluetooth device?

7. Have you properly configured your WiFi settings (static IP may be required)?

8. Is your vehicle OBD-II or EOBD compliant?

9. Are you in range of your OBD-II interface? Move closer and try again.

10. Is your OBD-II hardware interface defective?

just to add to this...

was at a friend's today with a 1998 S-reg 528 touring...
he has bought the wifi box (waiting for the lead to arrive) so I took mine along - bear in mind that he bought his wifi box from the same URL / seller on Amazon where I bought mine...
his gives a different wifi name (mine is CLK device his is ELM327)
my device / cable or his device / cable - both work the same...
but...
both worked on my iphone 5 - neither worked on his iphone 4s / ipad air
(both of us using Dash Command)

so... it is apparently not as simple as it seems :)
he can connect to the device, just not then talk any further - for me I can see the information tracking in real time...

Alasdair

Interesting.
I'm using iPhone 4s.
Wife has a 5 so will try with that if no joy on mine...

In dashcommand and the settings have you chosen ELM as the device?

Interesting also that Brian and I both have a box which gives a wifi network of CLKDevices....
my friend's doesn't...

we had identical settings - worked on my iphone, but not on either of his... maybe it is simply not a reliable system?

the other thing to note is that I have randomly had the ODB II error shown above...
I simply close the software and reload it / ditch the wifi network and reconnect it...

and it has always worked...

Alasdair

In dashcommand and the settings have you chosen ELM as the device?
Yes have chosen elm as the device in Dashcommand.
Will have a go later this week and let you know.

Hey guys, can you please advise if the following components will suffice for diagnostics, and clearing of codes with the appropriate software? I have included pix and the ebay reference numbers for the parts. I suppose that it would be better to purchase a good app from the app store to go with these items to have full functionality. I am starting to get somewhat confused with all the chat above and am unable to make a decision on what I should have. Thanks. I have tried to make the pix small. Seems cheap if they actually work! The magic is in the software I suppose.

Hi Cooper

The above items are ok, but the blue tooth ELM will only work with an android tablet, if you want to use an Ipad you will need a wifi ELM device. If you are using Android then you are ok.

Rich

As Rich says :)

but as we are finding on this thread - and with my friend it is not always simple - I bought my bits, plugged it in and it worked - same bits on his car / phone combination doesn't work, but does on his car / my phone!
so, there is probably something simple, but not obvious and between us we have very high level professional capabilities in IT and physics :D most bizarre!
