Well today is OWN UP DAY for me I'm afraid, you see this morning when changing the supposedly faulty Inlet cam senser I found it wasn't connected (And yes I did check it twice @gookah, shame I didn't/couldn't distinguish it from all the others under there) this tells me I should've taken loads of pics and made notes as I went along ensuring everything would be put back together orderly fashion like. Hard lesson to learn when back in the
70's I did all my own repairs. Had visions of multi vacuum leaks, faulty DISA and lastly faulty cam senser, now I know that all my sealing work was A ok and it was the unconnected cam senser all the time, now maybe get a good nights sleep at last.
Back to the real point of doing this swap. Does it work, just ask gookah cos he's of the same opinion as me and Ive found it really has been worth while, the Z now pulls better in all gears up to 2800rpm then becomes a differant Kettle of fish in that it just wants to go and my right foot is the only thing that holds it back.nuff said.
How much does it cost, well it's cost me more than it should which is totally down to my stupidity in not checking my connections properly and believing that the problem is actually worse than actually was.

Right!! What's it cost me;
1. M54 330i inlet manifold, £ 69
2. Bimmertune M52tuB28 to M54 330i TB adapter. £24 ( this is the one that you don't have to grind your TB to fit)
3. OEM TB rubber gasket and manifold gasket. £66 (main dealer)
4.CCV valve kit. £38
5.ICV to mani thick grey rubber bung £????? 5-7
6.330i DISA £130ish.
7.coolant sender unit £15
8. Gasket cement used between adapter and mani £7 (used even though there is a very shallow rubber ring)
9.DISA sealing ring( if used DISA ) £3
10. Injector seal kit £?
11. WD silicone spray and carb cleaner spay
12. WD40 for all elect connections if you feel warrants it.
I reackon if you've got a bubget of around £350 - £400 you could get this done providing you DIY and don't come across any more xpensive problems whilst doing it. Remember you might be able to purchase a mani with a decent DISA which will be a saving.
ROlling road remap will be done when and if I can find someone that can supply me with a BBTB, seems the tu is not commonly catered for,if not sooner rather than later.

After a 52 mile run today I scanned for faults and got all clear, so I'm happy as Larry.
OK So I've done myself no favours with missing the connections but I would say that if your interested in doing this swap for a more enjoyable drive in your 2.8tu then don't wait any longer, but remember this, no two engines are the same and I'm sure mine was going exceptionally well before doing this swap so fingers crossed yours will have the same outcome.
For those that might be interested I still haven't re connected my little box of trix which may or may not help produce a little more fuel into the larger air volume, will try it this week when I go out with/behind my friend in his 3.8 Carrera who will hopefully hold back somewhat, unless I can persuade him to follow me. (Bob hope springs to mind yet again):poke:

Not enough common and too many scary thought trails that made me blind to what was or would be good procedure Andy. Couldn't sleep with panick thoughts of my Z getting towed to the main dealer. Aaaaaaaaah, rather get a kick in the Crutch. All joking aside mate, with all this computer driven engine management it confuses the hell out of me so hence the panic. Must admit though without my little hand held bmw scanner I would be absolutely lost. Will now pay more attention to what it tells me rather than what I reackon is the problem. Would still go back to the old twin DCOEs, dizzy and leads tomorrow, all these sensors can cause havoc with the engine management, even a vacuum leak on these cars can make you pull your hair out.
Good job we have a lot of experienced people on here we can turn to,
My Z is a differant animal now Andy.

Glad you have this sorted, the old saying.. cannot see the wood for the trees is so true. I bet when you found it unplugged it would have been a feeling of delight rather than frustration.

Top work Roy

Andy I was astonished that I'd missed it more than once, age maybe playing its part nowadays. So happy it's sorted and shall from now on try thinking outside the box a little more. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks but it's a darn sight harder.(my new quote of the day):woot:

RHA. Roy.
PS. The feeling was similar to waiting all day to go to the loo, then that fantastic relief after :wacky:.lol

Two lessons I have leaned doing this swap.
1. Check the connections twice (no.... check them three times!) of all pipes and wires that can't be accessed after it's all back together.
2. Don't trust a used DISA valve.

RHa, Roy.
corrected that for you.....

I reckon if you've got a budget of around £350 - £400
RHA. Roy.:tumbleweed:
Just to balance it out for those that think the above costs are too much, mine cost £90 all in, £65 manifold £25 TB adaptor.
Though I didnt need to replace anything else.

Thanks Jim, the pains of owning a fairly modern car when your not really that up to date with tec is hard work to say the least, 50 yrs ago I'd been in the army for nearly 2yrs and when you say it like that it brings everything into perspective. Thank goodness I'm still waking up in the mornings.:wideyed:.......................=))

Regards,
Roy.

Where were you when I started this swap:banghead: ? seems I could have done half a dozen at that price. Must say I did reackon on changing everything I could whilst under there just in case I hang on to the car till I don't wake one morning.
Well done you.;) Hope I didn't frighten anyone with my costings. Don't tell my bank manager or I'll need an early grave.
Three is better than two, agreed.

Thanks again Roy. Just caught up again with your progress. Think I may have said it was a bad connection rather than not connected!
What scanner /fault code reader do you have? I need one preferably that covers both engine and running gear codes.

Hi @Jonno Bee. Maxiscan, Autel Ms309 is what I use, it's cheap and only good for petrol uk motors from 96-2001, cost me about £15 plus you'll need the adapter to connect it to the under bonnet round OBD2 plug. Seen the scanner on eBay for £10 recently so they've become even cheaper over time. It's not a all dancing all singing tool but it gives me the Code so enables me to look up the part at fault in my Bentley manual it also can reset codes after they've been fixed. I believe you'll have two OBD points to read codes from on your 2.8, one under steering wheel in drivers footwell which the connector that comes with scanner will fit and one round one under bonnet which will give you even more info hence the need for adapter which you can also buy on eBay. Cheap Chinese scanner but does the job good enough for me when used with the under bonnet adapter. Will do other OBD2 petrol cars 96-2001 as well.
