Sean, The attention to detail and the quality of the work is astounding. Are you going to use anything to protect the alloy engine parts you have cleaned and polished? CW
Thanks for the kind words, I probably wont put anything on the alloy, just repolish it every now and again, it only takes a few minute with brass wire brush drill attachment

Got a big tin of it from Tesco today, I will try some tomorrow
You just spray on, fairly small areas at a time as it evaporates quite quickly and it only needs (very) gentle agitation with an old paint brush. The only grease it won’t tackle is big nasty solid blobs. So scrape them off and let the Cif deal with the residue.

You can then rinse off, even in the engine bay, with a hose on a gentle flow. No pressure needed, you’re just rinsing off the Cif.

It works by lifting the grease up into the foam. There’s a name for that but can’t remember what it is.

Managed to find a bit of time today and got the boot and bumper in place, what a pain the bumper clips are where they join the wing, I bought 4 new ones and managed to break 2, they are really brittle

Sean,

I take my hat off to you. My minor work on Little MAU pales into insignificance when I look at the challenges you and others have undertaken on your cars.

CW
Its all relevant pal, when I first joined this forum I would have never undertaken some of the jobs that I have done on this Z, mainly rear sub frame but reading this sort of stuff everyday gives you confidence and knowing there is always help at hand makes life a lot easier, where are you based as we often meet at @t-tony place and help each other out with some of the more demanding jobs, Tony is a Mechanic and has a great set up in a double garage. I've missed it this year as I have been so engrossed in my current build

Sean,

Based in Lincoln. I have learned to rebuild engines, mig weld (poorly), and spray paint (very poorly) many years ago on my first car, an E21. I still tinker with cars, but our main driver is very reliable, so I have been limited to changing wear items. However, I do mess around with the software and diagnostics as an amateur and change the odd sensor when it fails.

The Z3 was a well thought out impulse buy (does that make sense?) so I am enjoying the odd jobs with her. We are very lucky with the condition she is in, so its mainly prepping her for a long life of driving and ensuring cosmetically and mechanically she stays sound.

Looking forward to seeing your Z in the flesh. I am sure the pictures, no matter how good they are, do not do her new coat justice.

Was looking at the front today and decided to remove the slam panel which has a small amount of front panel with it, there where far to many pros for doing this, easy access for prep and paint, front engine rebuild including new rad, new Vanos seals, cleaning the engine, etc etc
All I had to do was remove 4 screws and bust 7 spot welds, for some obscure reason the N/S has 1 and the O/S has 6, only took 15 mins of my dinner break, with the correct drill bit which is flat tipped the welds literally take a few seconds each and then just hammer a scraper in the join to pop them

Looks like you've got factory fitted rocket launchers on your motor Sean

I can never understand why they welded that panel, it is not welded on the E46 and removing it helps with many things.

I was quite shocked to see the welds Mike, I probably won't bother welding it back on

The design is the same on the E46, less the welds, I would drill through the old welds and fit nuts and bolts.

No need Mike as it is sandwiched between the chassis end and the bumper rams
