From a legal point they should be mounted on a vertical surface not flat on the bonnet.

So you could argue that they can't be mounted where the cooling of the radiator by air is impeded. Might work for a kit car, but not convinced it would work for a Z3. Some early E types had it mounted on the bonnet for this reason though I believe. Best leave be.Not quite
