Rebody Z3 to Kobra build thread

That's good to know, I like the stick on plate, it opens up the grill area. Anyone tried this on a Z3?

From a legal point they should be mounted on a vertical surface not flat on the bonnet.

Tony.

That’s how I understood it Tony. Kit-car forums discuss it quite a bit. It’s a lower penalty to not have a front plate than have one that’s not right colour, spacing, vertical.

So a lot of 7-type kits don’t even bother. I’d rather ruin the look of mine a little and have a legal plate (position, size, spacing).

Attracting the gents in blue is not my bag man.

I agree Dave, such a shame we have to have them as most cars look so much better without.

Tony.

Same thing then.

Tony.

Not quite

'Legally' they have to be mounted

'vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable'

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/part/II/made
So you could argue that they can't be mounted where the cooling of the radiator by air is impeded. Might work for a kit car, but not convinced it would work for a Z3. Some early E types had it mounted on the bonnet for this reason though I believe. Best leave be.:(

I’m keeping mine vertical. The car looks so crap and dirty I couldn’t get away with a ‘it’s a classic recreation officer’.

I’ve bought a new reg which I will be able to get a bit shorter plate for. When I go through the transfer I’ll see how it fits again.

Good convo chaps :)

I really can't see the point in antagonizing the police by putting things on which they need to pull you for Dave.
Not that I don't like those laid flat sticker type plates either. And, now they'll also have the test fail things to check on.

So Max the dirty Kobra is road legal...... yay !

MOT passed yesterday and only had to adjust the driver headlight height. So pleased.

Still stuff to do.

New steering wheel,
New Cat-back exhaust
Adding seat belt fixing thingies from Jason
Clean interior
Boot prop install
Figure out how to get my spinners onto the steels

Drive it !

Oh and get the heater to chuck out cool air not just hot ...

... oh and re-register it as a new model on the V5C

Change plates to the ones I spent money on ....

Drive it ...

Congrats for getting it ready for the road Dave. Now enjoy driving it while the sun shines mate.

Tony.

Love the "minimalistic" look, bet people give you a wide berth!!
Front plate needs moving though!!!

Thanks Ian and I agree about the front plate. Will drop it lower at least for now.

So I put the Kobra away before going on holiday first week of July. Then when I got back the project I was being paid for went ballistic and I didn’t get a chance to drive the grubby car until last week again.

I’ve tidied up some of the body work in readiness for some quotes to paint it, colour still to be agreed. Dammit ...

Also fitted a black mesh grill and moved the plates down.

Also during this period I sent off the necessary paperwork to re-register the car. Bought some shorter plates to go with the new reg and been driving it. The summer isn’t done yet !

Here are some pics from today’s ride out to an arboretum in Oxfordshire (cool place).
