More cleaning and an hour to replace a screw !!!!!!

Took all the plastic outside and cleaned everything this morning, which threw up a couple more jobs.

And my Hi tech washing station....

One of the things I found this morning was that the foam lining in the air filter box and lid was deteriorating so badly that if you touched it it went to dust.
Dont want this crap getting into the engine.
So stripped down the box and lid and binned it all. Washed all the parts and sent Sopers an enquiry to replace it........bugger !!!! Not supplied on it own and new box is £282.00.......
So anyone know what sort of foam to use and I will get some and make replacements.

Did a bit of rust restoring of various screws, fittings plus the bonnet catches

This was about an hour to replace the screw that holds the bottom right of the side panel.
I noticed the corner was loose and when the wheel lining came off, the screw fell on the floor. I can only assume that I didnt fully tighten it when I did the sills.

The rear anti vibration weights came up ok with a new coat of paint.

Actually got some bits reassembled today. :)

Slam plate, front shocks, wiring clipped back and lots of the plastic stuff put back.
D97EC0A3-1B3C-4FE4-B07F-BDE6DCF1B4C9.jpeg

The power steering loop just cable tied as haven’t got all the new fixings from Sopers yet.
Only got stuck on 3 bits.....two clips that went underneath the slam panel to hold the bonnet release cable, and a nut, until I realised it was one of the PS loop nuts that are all being replaced anyway.
The bucket is under the small rad hose in case the car burps and deposits some antifreeze on th floor=))
Couldn’t put it back with rusty screws though!!!!

I do have a question regarding the boot lid which I am swapping over.
B4CA83B0-8647-4855-BB88-1AA0D478C8BD.jpeg

Do you have to remove all the black plastic covers and disconnect all the electrics then pull them out from the bottom left corner grommet, or is there a plug somewhere under the carpet in the boot that can be disconnected???

Just need to nip up Halfords now and get a black spray to give the two rear bumper shocks a tidy up before they go back on.

You have to pull the loom out through that hole Malc. I did one last year, it is almost in two sections. I just tied a length of strong string onto the end. When you get to threading the string back through the new lid use some stiff wire to push up the left hand side of the lid then attach the string and pull it back through to tie to the loom. When you're pulling the loom through it will likely jam at times so just pull back gently on the loom and try again. A bit fiddly but easily doable.

Tony.

Excellent work so far, whist the boot lid is off it might be worth checking the section of loom that goes between the car and the lid as thats where the breaks occur and can cause a fire, I checked mine and found 2 faulty wires, one broken and one almost

Another day and more stuff removed !!!!

Started by pulling all the plastic covers off, removed the plugs and carefully took the wiring out.
Got it this far and it got stuck.....

A118152E-3DDC-420E-952B-F463286D765D.jpeg

Then reallised I should have disconnected the loom from the holding clips :banghead:

Pulled it all back with some stiff earth wire removed the clips and then with a bit of jiggling got the loom out.
As advised by @Sean d , undid all the wrap ( most of which was falling off) and checked all the wires from down in the boot through to the plugs and other than an inline connector joining two wires everything was ok.
8AE4857D-0EF5-4C4B-AA54-09E612DCE58E.jpeg

Once checked re wrapped the wires with electrical tape.

Didn't assemble the new boot lid as not sure if the paint shop would rather have the parts off the car.

One thing that was annoying is that the 3rd brake light lens had previously been damaged ( by some oik rounding off the hex head screws and plus it was held in with a black gloop
So I have lost my roadster decal as I cant reuse it !!!!! :(

Did you know you can fit a Z3 bonnet and boot lid into the back of a Kia Rio???????
79B1890B-4B50-46DC-87CE-054BE31AFE7F.jpeg

You can when I get at it with an angle grinder =))

And its final resting place....our local tip
10A8FA64-849F-497A-8F73-E44ED87AE876.jpeg

A good tip for anyone doing this in the future ......put something on the front bumper shocks as they bloody hurt when you walk into them.

Not a lot I can do now until the parcels with the new bits arrive.

I think that is all the stripping down complete....so every thing from now it will be putting it all back together:)

Top work again pal but it looks like you have not checked the part of the loom that fails, its the sleeved part immediately after the wing, it has the grommet either side, the sleeve can be a pain to move, I managed it on my last Z but on the 2.8 I cut it and taped it once repaired

@Sean d , After your earlier post and what I have heard about loom problems in this area, I checked all the wires from inside the boot (behind the carpet) then out through the boot grommet, where it clips to the hinge, then up to the boot grommet, and all the way to the plugs.
I moved all the grommets and sleeving by sliding them along the so I could check underneath the whole length of the wires.
