I was watching an uncle of mine in my Dad's garage as he and my Uncle decoked Uncle's engine. As they were nearly finished but still had the rocker cover off, I noticed a little tobacco tin on the bench and in it were a number of little spring clips. It turned out that these were valve stem collet clips that hold the two halves of the collets that you fit after compressing the valve springs and the collets retain the disc on the end of the spring. Some engines had a sort of keyhole arrangement that ensured they self-locked, but these had to be held in place by clips.
I received brownie points for seeing those before a) they had fitted the rocker cover, and b) before my uncle had started the engine which risked the collets popping out and the valve dropping into the engine!

When I was very young, I helped my father recondition the engine in our Morris Minor. When we got the engine in dad was eager to get it running and started it up, after a minute he hurriedly turned it off again, he had forgotten to put oil in the engine. Happily no ill effects.

Not sure where you've got to with this @Shelly but the offer is still there for me to bring my endoscope over to have a look in the plug holes

HI @smiffy
Im so sorry for the late reply 🙁
ive been a bit busy……
My Z is still in the garage , it’s had the compression test and another test done too …..
The garage is going to fit a new chain and bits this week, he said it doesn’t look like much damage has been done , hopefully I might have my Z back soon, it was our choice to have the chain fitted etc , we just hope it works lol 😂

if it had 4 good compressions, then you might be okay. You wouldn't get that if a valve was bent!

Fingers crossed!

I know the feeling! Spent most of this weekend trying to beat some life into mine! I think it's got too comfortable in a nice dry garage!

This time next week, we'll both be back on the road! =))=)) Well, you might be, me, not so sure!!

I had my wife’s old Polo jumped a few teeth with no damage. Hopefully you’ve got away with it Shelly and soon be back on the road🤞
Thank you @Althulas👍

If it can be saved with just a new camchain and guides, I would say you have dodged a bullet.
It is obvious how much the car means to you, so fingers crossed.

When my Z starter to make the terrible noise , I was only about 30 seconds away from home ,( just across the main road)

Hello Shelly.

How is Snow White? I’ve read what happened, the difficulties you’ve experienced and am wondering how your lovely Z is now. I’m hoping Snow White is on the road to recovery.

Thank you for asking about my beautiful Z …..🌞
Its still in the garage , we’re waiting for the new pieces to be fitted, and hopefully it will drive like a dream , to tell you the truth I’m getting very annoyed with the wait , it’s been 9 weeks now , I’ve been going to the same garage for over 30 years, I could go and collect Snow White but it’s going to cost more money, it was £100 just to get it to the garage which is only about a 7 minute drive …… 🥲
I just want my Z back it’s really getting to me now …….
It’s very frustrating just waiting and twiddling my thumbs 😳
When I drive my Z it puts a smile on my face and believe it or not makes me happy 😀
I can’t wait for the day when I get a call to say I can go and pick my Z up 🥳🥳🥳🥳

I know how you feel about your Z @Shelly and I feel the same frustration as I’ve been without mine for ages and ages while its worked its way up a waiting list for work to be done. My beautiful Z is, at long last, in the workshop having the works done - flies the flag 🇬🇧
My car’s delay has been that the business is specislist and very few do what it does so hence a waiting list.
I wonder about your garage, though. Is it prioritising quick turnaround jobs ahead of your Z? Is it capable to do the work? I know this is a basic question but there are far too many garages out there which will say yes they can do the work and they lack the expertise. This means they do a rubbish job and the car owner has to get the work done properly elsewhere.
If this were my Z, I’d look at other options and get it moved to a business which will do the work your beautiful Z needs as it arrives into the workshop. It’ll be worth taking the hit of £100 transportation fee to get the car back on the road.

you need to keep dropping in for a "progress report" every few days.

My customers do it to me, and invariably get queue jumped, just so they stop bothering me!

Yes it’s very frustrating, with waiting and waiting, my poor z never seams to get to the top of the list ,i don’t think I can go into the garage as I’ll blow a fuse lol 😂, I think I’ll give them a ring tomorrow to see what is happening, I’ll try to keep calm .
I hope you get your z back very soon too 👍
