FWIW….

The N20 isn’t really economically repairable with those faults…

The tear down / rebuild costs will be very significant.

Quite a few N20s are now going down with bore score..losing compression on one or more cylinders..that’s not repairable under any circumstances..

I know an E89 that had the same issues..£6.5k to supply and fit a 65k mile engine..

Sorry to be the bearer of bad opinions
We have already looked at buying a recon engine, but is it all worth the money, I don’t know , we’re stuck behind a rock and a brick wall
hopefully, we will know more what is happening next week, fingers crossed 🤞

Its a tough one with such depressed market values..in the case(s) I know it was driven by the fact that they really loved that car..so tipped the money in..I know a few people who having got an earlier warning off loaded their N20 E89s to WBAC..

Ideally look for a post April 2015 engine as they have revised internals

Thank you , I’d love to keep my Z , but I was going to sell it later this year or next year to get a newer model 🌞

In that case maybe selling it as a non runner maybe a more cost effective option…I guess see what pans out

Food for thought Shelly.

The advert does ask for you to contact them before buying.

It’s a reconditioned engine, description in the advert
That’s just seems too good to be true..who skim heads and regrinds cranks and fits it for less than £2k?

If the valves have not touched the pistons, then a repair to your engine shouldn’t be to costly. It would require taking the engine out of the car and replacing the cam chain, cam follower and cam and big end sprockets, but that’s only if the pistons haven’t touched the valves.

It’s an interference engine..jumped timing chain ..

If I'm not mustaken, the OP said that the garage "thinks" it's skipped a tooth. I haven't seen any post that confirms that it actually has.

Apparantly it fires on two - the garage said. I don't know these engines but surely if there's been a valve bounce at any speed then I don't think it will be firing on any.

Ah..thnx..many cars will run with bent valves albeit poorly…

Loss of compression on these can be either bent valves or bore score..the first is expensive and could be really expensive..the second is terminal for the engine..imho

If it was my car this is what I'd.do. (mine is a 16 valve M44 engine but principle should be the same)

Spark plug out

And here's a nice picture of the top of my piston

Not bad nick for an 80,000 mile engine.

If your piston has hit the valves it will not look like that. It'll have marks on it. If it does then I'd scrap the engine. If all pistons are free of dings then I'd continue inspecting.

Time taken. 10 minutes. Including ages it took to find my plug socket.

Cost of endoscope camera. £9.99 from amazon.

Nice clean crowns!

If no piston /valve damage then its bore score..outside of blown head gaskets etc

OP's fault description in first post is that the car was running perfectly then suddenly it ran rough. Next day it wouldn't start.

So something sudden rather than a long drawn out engine wear problem. Skipped a tooth or blown head gasket would fit the bill.

So. If endoscope doesn't show any visible dings on piston then next thing is rocker cover off and check cam timing. No point in doing compression test if cam timing is way out. It will be way out if a tooth was skipped.

If cam timing is ok then tooth was not skipped. In that case next thing is compression test.

Anybody else thinking back to the days of pulling the head off an engine, changing a couple of valves, and slapping it back together in a day?
I guess this is what progress brings.
Must say, this "garage" doesn't seem to be up to much.
Indeed! It only seems like yesterday my cambelt snapped on my XR3i. My dad, who wasn't a mechanic, (I helped a bit) pulled it into the garage at home, changed a few valves, followers and shims and had it back on the road in a weekend.
Only mistake was taking the head off at the bottom of the driveway then realising it needed to get into the garage, so we pulled it up the driveway on the starter motor, but the waterways and oilways were open so oil got into the water. Never completely cleared the mayonnaise after that.

@Shelly was that engine replacement on eBay li posted of any use? As it advertised at a reasonable price and stated fitted if that’s trueful but I suppose it’s what the car is worth as a non runner vs the being repaired.
We have to take the car to the place where the engine is in London, to have it fitted 🌞
But thank you for looking for me 😀
It’s kind of you 👍

I learned a lot as a kid watching my dad regularly doing a 'decoke' on his car engine. Took a day or maybe two. It seemed to be a regular event and almost a religious ritual.
