I'm not sure what you mean by using the side windows as a datum? It's still using the original z3 mounting brackets. What I'm doing is just changing the shape around the back. The actual postion is not going to be adjusted.

It didn't look like you had used the rear mounts, but using all four mounting points is the way to go.
 
That's where I'm at right now. Ride height looks like the car is on tippy toes 😂

It's going in for the mot today. Will sort the ride height after.

I currently have a gap of 85/90mm between the top of the tyre and the outer arch. I'd like to bring it down by 50mm but know it'll affect other things.

Looking at bc racing coilovers as they're height and damper adjustable.

Have you got any pics of how your car sits (before and after lowering).

Mine is purely for aesthetics 😀

I used BC coilovers on the front and rear.
 
The following photo is 507 from the Korean Museum. The tires are significantly larger than our standard Z3, and the arches are also taller. The ground clearance is also over 200mm. Therefore, I am of the opinion against lowering the ride height. The shorter a girl's skirt, the sexier she is.
Hadn't realised that the wheels look off centre in the wheel arch on the original
 
Only other option is fill the whole wheel arch with larger wheels/tyres. I have some 19" ones which would do the job.

First trial fit. This side the gap is about 5mm which is OK.

But that's it for today.

I'll take it for a drive this evening. Over some speed humps to see if it bounces on the body.

Period wheels were smaller, but with taller sidewalls. The problem is matching wheel diameter, wall profile with tread width. I had to use 17" wheels because mine is an M. Any other Z3 will take 16" wheels, and some can take 15" wheels. I have a set of 15" Dunlop lookalikes that didn't work. Two of them have 255s on them - they are far too tall.

I'd go for the smallest wheel diameter you can get away with and try to find tyres to suit.

I'm considering 15" pepper pot alloys (style 36) and taller tyres. See how tall I can go.

Paint the wheels body color except for a polished rim. But I must confess I'm not overly keen on spacers so another option is steels with an offset that brings the wheel out an inch on the back.

There'a a rule about the distance from widest point of car to the side/tail lights. Surely this is too far?

So I reckon I'll flip them round.

But even then it's still quite a distance. From where to where is it measured?
 
I think the "legal" distance is measured inwards from the outside edge of the car. Both lights have to be "roughly" the same distance in on each side, and the same height but not identical.

The tail lights of most car models currently on the market are installed on the outermost side of the car. Although the laws of each country are different, it is assumed that there will be no restrictions on the side parts.
