For Sale "M" STYLE GEARSHIFT SURROUND.

Just wanted to tell you all - I had a dream last night in which it came to me on how to simplify the entire item as regards fitting. Damned unfortunate it doesn't apply to the version you have just received.... I wish I had come up with this 12 months ago.,...anyhow, I've also started getting an engineering outfit here to look at using their CNC machines to take up all the heavy shaping work of the top curved surface. I was doing that all by hand with files and sand papers - real PITA.... I have no doubt the cost will increase as a result, but at least I'll not have to spend 3 days on each piece and bloodying my fingers etc...
I'm just so P'd off that I hadn't come up with the fitting idea earlier. It would have been an easy 20 minute job...:wtf:

Please tell us more about the fitting. I have not done mine yet as waiting for my special screw driver set to arrive from China

It's a little difficult to explain, but essentially it will do away with the "2 halves" of the unit, and have a simple "skirt" under the part which will replace the plastic thingy to which the leather boot is glued... The skirt will fit snugly to the interior walls of the hole in the console, and clip under the bottom of the console hole. The leather boot will simply be glued to that skirt... so fitting will mean removing the OEM boot with the plastic thingy, removing the leather from the plastic and gluing it to the skirt... once dry, the surround trim can simply be pressed into the console hole and it will clip in.... job done !! Removal will be by removing the 10 screws to detach the chrome trim from the skirt which will allow the boot plus skirt to be removed if you need access to the area under it.... then simply re-assemble the surround chrome trim to the skirt plus boot with the 10 screws and press it back into the console hole - so flipping simple !! I can't see why I didn't think of it before -
I gotta get a life !! imagine dreaming stuff like this !!:wacky:

Another difference will be that the actual chrome trim part will be thicker to compensate the loss of the lower part currently used - so again, less finishing work to be done... I'm waiting on a "sample" of the thicker part from the laser cutting guys, and as soon as I have that, I'll get it to the CNC fella to work his machining magic.... once I get that back, I can fit the skirt - drill and thread the 10 holes into which the screws will go, and make sure the clipping works by fitting each unit into my spare console part - then, it can be lightly buffed, and sent for plating - I also found another electro plater - a longer drive to get to him, but I believe he will deliver quicker - He's a Brit.... and at least we talk the same language...:joyful:

Here's mine fitted

Fitted mine Barry without gluing cutting etc found it to quite a pressure fit to the ring underside and there is no movement.
Driven 100 plus miles and it doesn't move lifting the foam insert further underneath would also apply more pressure.
I countersank the long screws into the base ring to get them flush and simply re fixed the chrome ring.
Different to your instructions but certainly made it alittle easier and the result seems good.

Good thinking ! I'm sure a couple of the other guys will be onto you for some direction shortly. Must say it looks really good fitted...
You guys certainly don't waste time getting the "chores" done...;)

Please can I ask you guys to email me a pic of each of your fitted trims...I'd like to make use of them at some point - maybe fleabay..
You all should have my email addy... searchinc@worldonline.co.za
Cheers...

All of the installations look right on and I also was unsure about having to glue the leather in place but certainly can see why you put it in the instructions Barry. After all you as the supplier wouldn't want anyone complaining if their's pulled out constantly if not glued. My pics may come in spring as doing some Reno on the house and it's forecast for snow tonight! Keep on dreaming many of the world's problems have been solved that way!! JIM

Hi Antm & Barry
My chink screwdrivers did not arrive after waiting all this time so have purchased another set and came today.
One conflicting bit of info unless I am wrong Barry sometimes you say a T6 torx and sometimes a T16, now that I have the screwdrivers I see that it is T6.
Antm your method sounds easier but sorry to be a pain but can you explain in more detail for me please

Geoff

Hi @Geoff Crispin i've fitted mine without sandwiching and cutting the gaiter anywhere.
The base ring bolts in as per the instructions but not on the top surface. When you remove the gaiter there is a lip all the bolts bolt through it.

i have the top and bottom bolted up as it arrived but the longer bolts have been countersunk as above so the heads are flush and the two parts fit together flush.
I removed the plastic surround/base from the gaiter but then just refitted it over the foam under neath it fits fine with out any fixing / gluing etc

The gaiter wants to push higher than the bottom piece hence it looks sandwiched but its just pressure from the foam part making the gaiter fit up tight against the bottom plate.

Once fitted you bolt the chrome bit down as the gaiter normally sits higher than the console it provides enough pressure to fit snug.

Not found any issues doing it this way and it sits fine in my zed.

Hi Antm
That looks good thanks for sending info. At this stage I would say that I have put a new gaiter on but there is no foam as far as I remember so will have a look/fit over the weekend but its F1 again I think so it might no happen, but will let you know.

Thanks

Geoff
