Thanks Tony.....I was wondering where that tube connected...

Just been out to have a look, and the hole was totally blocked and the tube not connected to the gaiter, but with some gorilla glue, it will be as good an new

One thing I meant to say about working on the car today......

There is an obvious danger of working under a car. Tricia’s uncle was killed when a car fell on him.....but he was using bricks to support the car!!!!!

When I first put the car on the stands, I rocked it and kicked the stands to make sure it was well supported and not likely to move......and it was all solid, and nothing moved.
Since then, I have removed pretty much everything from the rear end and as a result, when I was sweeping up all the crap from under the car, I hit one of the rear axle stands .....and it moved!!! I checked the other side and it was the same. So what has happened, by removing all the weight from the back, the centre of gravity has moved forward .

What I have done to combat this, is to add two additional axlestands under the front beam.

I thought I would mention this, and make forum members aware that there is a possibility, albeit a slim one, that an accident could happen.

I never noticed this when I did the 1.9, so it may be that the larger heavier 2.8 engine makes the difference.?????

A very good point Malc and thank you for pointing it out. I have seen similar things happen before, even with a vehicle on a ramp when you remove a heavy part of that vehicle the dynamics do change. When I started looking for a lift for my place several YouTube videos had mentions of "You would never get me under that thing", well I can report that it is extremely stable, but, you cannot be too careful and this is exactly the tip you need to be aware of. Not much done today....just cleaning

First bit was fun though, put the fuel tank and spare wheel holder in the back garden and got the jet wash on it...
The dirt flies off.......mostly into next doors garden .......
.........if she says anything about her washing , I’ll blame the seagulls

But not a bad transformation....

I could reuse this tank, but the other one has the earth link in better condition.

Which brings me on to next issue...decided to get underneath and wash it all prior to sorting out the rusty bits. ( just surface issues that need treating) and found a stud with a rusty nut on it.......Didn't stand a chance once I got the super sockets out

I am assuming that this is where the tank earth locates.

After getting more water on me than the car, I did manage to clean most of the underside. But I had enough of cleaning by then, and anyway, it needs to dry off before I get on with the derusting part.......say next week

I put the vinyl glove over the two fuel lines to stop any water getting in there.......but it looks like the car is trying to tell me something.

The brake lines are not original, and to be honest look like they were installed by Stevie Wonder......I have to cut them to insert a joining piece anyway, so I may cut them further back and redo the lot......and make them all nice and neat.

You must be a mind reader mate, when I looked at those brake pipes I had exactly the same thought. Maybe it’s OCD, but, I cannot understand why someone would leave pipes looking like that.

One last job today......

Fixed the drain pipe back onto the tank filler gaiter.........a little bit of gorilla glue.....and fixed

And Even managed not to fill the vent hole up with glue when I did it

One thing less to buy !!!!!!

I thought I would mention this, and make forum members aware that there is a possibility, albeit a slim one, that an accident could happen.

Been there and done it, not a nice experience. Luckily I only suffered a broken collar bone and I am still here to tell the tale.

PS ... Where did you source the replacement bolts for the rear plates?

Made some progress today....and never even went into the garage .......(wish that was the case every day) ...but then I suppose it could be if I sent it all up to Lee and just said put it all back together

Firstly ....found a really good O/S trailing arm, Great!!!!! But it was in the USA ....not so great...but bit the bullet and got it.
So that, together with the N/S one from Lee, and the Beam from Andy ( Spurs), means I have got all the main parts now sorted ..so can start thinking about getting all the bushes, bearings etc etc in readiness, to get the back end rebuilt once the arm turns up ( about 3-4 weeks delivery).......and hopefully no import duty

So then a ‘ necessary’ trip out .....a 140 mile roof down blast in the 1.9, to drop off lots of bits at ZSHQ that will be going with the beam to be shot blasted and powder coated next week.

Mind you .....there is plenty to do in the meantime

Plenty of time to have the underneath, brake lines and front end done in time for a rear end assembly subject to changeSteady progress though Malc and not as overwhelming as your first assessment but still a pain in the ass but will another saved from scrap heap
