1999 Z3 2.8 winter project

Nah barely a complete tool set lad lol buying as i need lol. Im wanting to get it sorted ready for powder coating so least will have it ready for fitting after christmas. Going to have to put the brakes on for a few weeks now with christmas rolling in so if can get all ready, after christmas will be on the home straight. Im gonna be at a loose end once its finished 😅 feels like im too close to the finishline
 
I had no press, so blow torch to the rescue once it gets going it’s sorts itself out but be prepared for a lot of mess and tidy up before the wife comes home but if you have a garage that can do it nearby saves a lot of faff. Looks like plenty of rust clean up but worth it in the end. If your thinking of refurbing the drive shafts worth a look at Restore it YouTube channel he does plenty of bits incommen with the zed https://www.youtube.com/c/RestoreIt
 
A triangular file can be useful on driveshaft splines.

Im already completely surpassing what i assumed id ever attempt to do with her or any car for that matter. If wasnt for lee being so helpful on fb messenger while i ask question after question every night id be at a loss quite early on lol. He genuinely has been far too kind in thay regard. My patience would have worn thin a longgg time ago lol

Saying that Id also be lying if i said i wasnt starting to run out of steam. Its been every night for the last 2 months nearly.

There is going to be quite a few mechanical jobs im going to have to pass to my neighbour (exhaust install, Handbrake repair, confirm brakes are all ok, check powersteering leak) and if the driveshafts being referbed is a recommended job (115k 20yrs old never touched) then it might be worth it dependant on cost but watching that video id say alot of that is out of my personal comfort zone!

Also friend mentioned replacing valve gasket and cleaning out all the gunk (believe thats what he called it) said made a huge difference to his old bmw.

Its a funny thing this sorta craic. Ya do a job like this then ya pass on things like awh itll be alright. Then later your like well ive gone this far, shame not to put new there too.. when does she stop being her original self? 🤔😅
 
Yeah I know what you mean I suppose I’ve had the luxury of stockpiling bits and bolts over a three year period but by the time you’ve finished you will have a fresh as new running gear and will handle and feel that way so all worth it. You still have months until spring arrives so plenty of time to pace out jobs. All I would say is take a step back Rome wasn’t built in a day and set realistic goals for a week into bite size jobs before moving onto the next one or two items to address when refurbishing stuff and take your time you will end up with better results and satisfaction. You’ve done a Stirling job so far and will get there in the end. In that link I gave you it also has a vid on drive shafts and quite straight forward compared to what you’ve done so far.

I’m well behind any schedule I set as I need to work away from home and have annoyed some villagers with my car being on axel stands for 18/12. Have everything ready apart from a couple of items I want to add a protective layer of paint and reassemble the back and then onto the front, then the length of the inner sills to do, then front bumper off cooling and ac to overhaul just need a compressor, some new o rings and dryer to get back on the road. Have a few more long term projects to sort out but all progress and it’s a keeper.
 
Once i get this part dismantled im gonna deliver for powdercoating and leave it for after christmas and get a few things gatheted up for rebuild. Only really need bushes, handbrake cables abs sensors and brake lines i think. Then its repanel time and decide if want to respray or not 🤔

That was oddly satisfying.

See one of the caps has been damaged and has allowed the hub to rust a bit. Hoping a bit of wirewheel will clean it up.

Shopping basket for the rear end is starting to add up rightly 😬. Will have to see if can reduce costs somewhere.

Thankfully nothing major needs replaced. Just everything small is totalling up more than i was expecting.

Going by the costs could be february before rear end is back in her. Which isnt too bad and still on track timewise. Just when ya doing things like this hate to take breaks lol

Might get the wife to buy me some car stuff for christmas just to keep my costs down 🤔=)):whistle:

I am waiting on rear end suspension parts from car-parts.ie which i think are also autodoc and they are very well priced.

Fair skite cheaper than what i've got priced here at the moment minus a few parts im down in price around £140 there 🤔
