Just like to thank you all for your efforts on my behalf. Am happy to have a go at getting the stalk out though the sites I've seen say remove the steering wheel and whilst I've got the tools I'd be a bit nervous about the airbag, even with the battery disconnected. If anybody's done the indicator stalk without removing the wheel it would be good to know.

I'm still not sure how to test it without a circuit diagram unless I bought a replacement, there's one on eBay for £25.00, new they're nearly £70.00, and just swapped it out. Could always sell it if it didn't change anything.
Thoughts..??
I found this, so looks like you might be right removing the steering wheel (it is not a big deal, scary but do it right, nothing will go wrong)

Yeah thanks for this it's confirmation of what I suspected this morning, took the covers, top and bottom off and there isn't enough room to get at the bolts.
So am planning to do a swap out of the stalk as i found one for £9.00 and its worth that to move the problem on. I noticed on the connector there are only 4 wires going into the loom. So given the functions left, right, dip/main and BC would I be right thinking the switch would be be earthed in the screw connections fixing it to the column??

Seeking some advice on what could be causing the OBC to not show any information when depressing the stalk. The display seems to be working fine as the clock, service indication all seem Fine and when I first drove it did display the range of miles but Wouldn't switch to show other features. I did change the battery but since then even the range indication no longer shows..I have had the binnacle out but nothing obvious and ideally want to avoid having to send that away if possible
Not sure if changing the battery could be a factor? When I changed the battery last year in our Z4 everything seemed to be OK except for the air con. After searching I found out that when the battery is removed the car goes into transit mode; i.e. it basically shuts down and in our case the air con didn't "wake up" when the new battery was fitted. Luckily it only cost me £40 to get it diagnosed and sorted.

Hi zed carer thanks for the info, how did you get the aircon reawakened was it a dealership issue?
I have used a local Bosch Service centre for over 12 years and their diagnostic equipment was able to clear the battery fault code and that sorted the air con.

So after a rather embarrassing pause in the proceedings the problem has now been successfully resolved thanks to a combination of suggestions so big thanks to all contributors.
I took the car to a local BMW independent with a high rating #3 in all of Wales so was reasonably confident they knew what they were talking about.
They put one of their diagnostics to work and low and behold it diagonosed an internal short circuit in the switch when the BC button was depressed. Hence confirming the fault was in the stalk. As I had the replacement that I bought for £9.00 Off eBay with me I got them to change it out. In all they charged me 1.5 hours labour for the switch and diagnostics, which came to £89.00. Inc VAT. They even dropped me at a local Costa and picked me up which saved me about 10.00 in taxi fares. All in all
a great result

Always the simple things ;)

Glad it’s sorted. Now you can find out how much go-juice you’re using in real time

Many thanks to you both. I learned a bit about current generation switches in that there no switched voltage like in my day its all signals to one of the many management units. Makes the switches hard to trouble shoot I understand so getting the sophisticated diagnostic was definitely the key.
