The connections to the sender unit are listed as a known fault on these cars on the Autodata system we have at work. They also recommend checking the wiring to the sender too.
@Millhouse you need to remove the fuel pump/ fuel level sender threaded collar and sealing ring and the manual says you need a special tool # 16 1 020 or you could damage the collar. First you need to drain the fuel tank or you'll dump gas over your interior. I'd try the cleaner first before going to that though. Let me know how you get along and I'll send the instructions for testing the unit once it's removed from the car. There is also a pressure sensor located on top of the fuel tank and you need to drop the tank. HTH JIM
It's the old bull young bull story. Take your time and be patient. Do the simple things first as they are inexpensive. See what happens after a couple of tanks of cleaner added then move along if the problems still there. Don't sweat it in the meantime and now you have a good excuse to drive your car, just keep track of how far you've gone on the gas available. JIM
