I need help folks. Would a hardtop from a 1998 Z3M roadster fit a standard 2000 Z3? Would there be any other issues I need to take into account eg heated back window switch set-up?

David.

As Boysie said, fits all but depends if you buy BMW or Weissman.
Weissman came out first with a hardtop before BMW even thought about it and I know for a fact that the fitting kits for both are different, I have a Weissman.
I would not worry about the heated rear window, as I have it on mine but have never used it, as the heated wing mirrors defrost very quickly and my wind deflector is up even under the hardtop. Cuts out head light glare at night.

I didn't mention them as I doubt one of them wouldn't be on eBay :) after reading the grief Deano went through trying to fit it , I wouldn't want one

Ok folks, I think I have managed to get a hardtop and fitting kit from a '98 ZM Roadster. I have attached a photo of what I believe are the contents of a typical hardtop fitting kit. I would welcome your comments on whether this is a complete kit?
1. Do I need to ensure all of the parts in the photo come with the hardtop?
2. Is the long key necessary or can I substitute with some other tool eg an Allen Key?
3. Recommended transportation - dimensions of the hardtop - could I fit on site.

I will be travelling 250 miles to collect. Should I chance driving the Zed 250 miles to have it fitted or is it possible I could run into problems?

All comments welcome.

Thank you.

David.

If you have the fitting kit pror to collecting hardtop fit it to the car and then collect
the hardtop, any minor adjustments can be done at home at your leisure
The long torx tbar is better, its easier to screw in the fixing bolts x2, it does need a bit tension
so the long handle comes in handy
The spanner could be out of the car tool kit?, everything seems correct
Regarding the hardtop, fitting it will tell you whether all the bits needed are there

I also believe you have the right parts, get the bolts also. This is only the installation kit, be sure your hardtop has the correct fittings attached also as they are required. As stated you may have the tools needed in your boot kit but you can pick up the proper tools on ebay or better still at your local that sells torX wrenches, etc. you will also need the fittings attached at the front so be sure the top has them as well as the bolts to tighten it down. If possible mount the install kit prior if possible as it's labour intensive then it's a small matter of driving out and installing the top but ensure you have assistance. HTH JIM
Just to add: I had my top delivered by van about the same distance for £150 so check that out also!!

Forgot to ask: would there be any issues with the roll bars I have fitted conflicting with the inner roof dimensions of the hard top?

Not usually, as long as they were designed for the car and don't interfere with your soft top! Just to add to my previous post, make sure you get the defogger wiring and switch with your top. They are available used but not a common item on ebay. Made the mistake of not obtaining them when I bought the top but I'm waiting to get the car before buying as I plan on doing a stereo upgrade like Zedonist posted so may need to move the switch. Shippers tell me " this weekend" finally. Over thirty days for a move supposed to take 7-10 days. But not grumpy yet!

Well I have managed to get a hardtop and fitting kit. I purchased the Hardtop mentioned in this thread in the end for the Sum of £340 inc delivery and I managed to find the fitting kit on the German ebay for £270 inc postage (and damn Paypal fees) initially they did not have or show the covers but I had a chat with them and the guy eventually found them too ..so I ma a happy bunny, I am going to see if I like the two tone look of shiney black top and Montreal Blue body or just get it resprayed.:)

Yikes hardtop fitting kit price on Ebay uk: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Z3-HA...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20eadb8b50

Sounds like you did okay on the top and fittings! The link you provided is about 1/2 the price of another on there. I've seen them sell for up to £1995. over the past year. JIM

Excellent value for both top and kit - looking forward to seeing it fitted, with any tips you wish to share.

Best Wishes.
