I have a 1.9 and a 2.2. The 1.9 must be a great one as it’s quicker than the 2.2.

The bigger engine the better as you can add new parts. But not an engine really

There must be something wrong with the 2.2

Thanks very much to everyone for the welcomes and engine advice above.

I've gone for this 2.2i Sport in Atlanta blue and beige (yes, I know!). Better pictures to follow.

62k miles, in good condition internally and appears to be mechanically and structurally sound but for a bit of suspension wear and brake pipe corrosion. I'll be searching the forums but if anyone wants to jump in with their own experiences of any of the following then please do:

- rusty door sill covers (not falling apart, but I'd guess cheaper to replace than repair)
- various stone chip bubbles/rust spots (mainly wheel arch panels in front of door and rear wings),
- peeling alloys,
- wiper arm rubbing against the bonnet lid,
- passenger side electric seat adjust dead,
- cloudy rear window,
- half inch crack to plastic wing mirror casing,
- front and rear bumper scuffs and chips,
- cracked front fog light,
- cracked side light,
- cracked rear light,
- bubbling around boot latch.

She's also sporting an 11 year old pair of ditch finders at the rear. I know what to do about those - to the tyre shop... slowly.

On the plus side, the engine feels like most of the 168 horses have survived the years, it's had regular services and I couldn't see any terminal rust problems, e.g under the boot carpet or generally around the undercarriage. The roof and rubber seals are all in good condition and watertight too.

I'm going to get her MOT'd next week and will have a go at as many fluid changes as I can manage myself. Then onto the fun restoration stuff!

James

Thanks, I've updated my post. Picture upload fail!

Hi James, glad to hear you landed a car. Sounds like a solid base to start from. Any questions fire away as most, if not all, issues Zed related have been dealt with on here. Keep us posted on the car's progress please.

Tony.

Update: MOT passed today.

Just a slight play in one of the front lower suspension ball joints to deal with. No rust issues underneath that can't be cleaned up and sealed and it sailed through the emissions test. I can't fault this 2.2 engine so far.

I feared much worse based on the condition of the fore end of the driver's side sill cover.

I'll start a progress thread once I get underway. In the meantime, I have a few parts to find.

I have 5 (yep 5) 2.2s and they are a fantastic engine. 2 are on the road and 3 are projects btw. All but one is a Sport though. And that bizarrely had most of the Sport kit spec'd as extras!

But I'm afraid your car is not a Sport. It's a mis-used term in adverts and you might have been mislead here.

Your To Do list looks very modest to me. I suspect it will grow ;) If not that's mostly easy work within DIY capabilities.

I have a large amount of spares if you need anything.

Just out of interest, was "Sport" a (sub) model of 2.2s? What were the differences between standard and sport? Perhaps a "sports package"?

My 1997 brochures do not mention a "sport model" as such (1.9 or 2.8). The only reference to "sport" is in "sports seats" which could be specified as optional equipment.

Ripped from another forum ....

BMW likes to money grab with ///M logos on standard cars. The current Z4sdrive35is is a good example. It has ///M logos all over the interior and the front and rear facias as well as the wheels emulate the E85 M Roadster IMO. I think it is sad. If they want to make an M car- do it. Don't try to fool people with badges that don't mean it.
It is worse in Europe, where they have M-Technic packages, all looks, not real meat.

I think we are confusing Sport specification from 20 years ago with modern M Sport branding and exploitation.

The Sport has a limited slip diff, lowered suspension, very nice Style 78 wheels and highly desireable seats.

Then you have smaller touches like illuminated gearknob and front bumper grill.

Thanks for educating me @mrscalex. Good to meet a 2.2 expert!

I'd actually misled myself on what a "Sport" version was with a bit of cursory research. I thought there was a "Sport" version and a "Sport Edition" version, with the former having little over the standard 2.2 than the sportier bumper. I now find that all 2.2s had the sport bumper (with lateral slats rather than the Sport Edition honeycomb centre).

Thankfully, this was all post-purchase research and I didn't take it into account on price.

@Ianmc Here's where I got my info. According to this the "Sport Edition" was introduced for mk 2s: http://www.onlyz3.com/en/special_se.html

I've updated the thread title to prevent any confusion.

My only concern is you didn’t get ripped off by the seller.

They’re all Z3s at the end of the day!
