so... update on this, first thermostat I am still in talks with QH about and they are trying to fob me off big time for the past two weeks, sorry guys, aint going to happen ;-)
second thermostat has been replaced by micks garage, again after a lot of e-mails tooing and froing I got them to replace it, they said it would be replaced with a QH stat but it seems I have gotten a Gates one so happy days ;-)
QH are saying that the company was taken over this year and the item I got is no longer part of their range and as such, them being the new company cant stand by the product.... I am saying that it is or was a QH product and as such regardless of takeover or whatever they should stand by the product, buying over QH they have inherited any past and present business, am I right? regardless, as a customer to QH or whoever I am entitled to have a faulty product replaced or reimbursed, no?
So, basically, you are still out of pocket for 1 thermostat, surely whoever supplied that thermostat should reimburse you for that?

I'm running without one...

The stat sets the floor not the ceiling and does not control the viscous fan..

Other than more engine wear on start up I see no disadvantage ..I will compensate by running 10w60 oil which is specified as ok in the the M44 handbook and the higher viscosity will protect the engine at lower temp..its the lesser of two evils. .if the M44 overheats you will be changing the head gasket and getting a warped head skimmed.

trust me.

Have done 2 now!

On start up with 10w- whatever you are starting with 10 weight oil which thickens up as the oil heats up. You should be running a 5w to provide lube when oil is cold. Here where the temps drops to -40 or lower 0w is recommended. I agree with David, running a stat saves other engine/ exhaust parts. JIM

obviously the stat is there for a reason...but blimey, if they fail closed its a big issue,

having just been through hell with this engine I am doing whatever creates a free flow of coolant..yes she will run rich for longer on start up but the engine will still reach temp and then its all as normal.

I may just fit a new stat in the next day or two ..althought this one as new a few months ago it seems to take a long time to open on start up.

re the oil, I stand corrected that is 100% right.

i'm just about to drop the oil and do a service after the head replecement, I just have some final timing to do before I do it..will stick to 5w40..

its cheaper anyway!

i'm just understandably cautious now with this engine and cooling.....95 degrees seems very hot for the thermostat to open.

I just took a screen capture and posted that for effect as the explosion was due to a LPG cylinder explosion - I wanted to avoid the actual reason! :)

David , I can relate..

have one eye glued the the temp gauge these days....!

I went ahead and fitted the stat, I was running without one and I must say the car gets up to temp much quicker...we did an oil change at the same time with 5w30

I can report that if you leave the front end up on jacks whilst bleeding the system the airlocks all go to the highest point....I have never refilled and bled a system of coolant quicker on an M44 than when doing this.

a nice little incline or hill would work just as well...

happy to report she is running fantastically well..!

just as well as some t**t drove into the side of my alfa on the M4 she is in the body shop..not happy

.if not for some very tasty driving on my part i'd be writng this from heaven..or at very least a hospital bed.

some people!.

anyway nice to have the zed back and runnig like a champ!

Niceone ;) this infomation made a full service and thermostat change a very quick job over the weekend. Nice little engine to work on too. Lifting the nose in the air made bleeding the system only take minutes.
