If I reached under our bed chances are I'd have to chase an intruder down the stairs with a rampant rabbit, and no guessing where I'd shove it if I caught them.

Disclaimer
Jill used to be an Ann Summers rep and she's got a toy box that would make Rambo wince …….. and I work away a lot =))

As an aside to my previous post, when Jill was working for AS she used to sell a dozen or so RR every week and I used to get the batteries for her. I used to buy 100 Duracell at a time from Cornwall Battery Services. A lady used to serve me and one day she asked me where all these batteries were going. After I told her she turned bright red and left the shop. She refused to serve me again due to her being embarrassed. When I told Jill she said the lady had been to one of Jill's "demo's" =))

Does a conversation with a 3’ bit of scaffolding pole constitute excessive force?

Had a massive spate of car break-ins and house break in and burglary recently in the local area. Immensely frustrating as there is little you can do but be observant - not easy at 3am.
Don’t know where it’s available but found an app that allows the community to get warnings out to others living within a small geographic area. It is called WeAlert.

It works. Within a minute you can get an indication of some scoat prowling the area. The recommendation is that everything of concern is reported to 101 or 999/112 if urgent.
My fear is that with such stressed police forces that it sets expectations that any minor issue if reported will get dealt with. The best we can hope for is that information is added to intelligence. The app allows everyone locally to be more alert. The risk is it allows vigilantes to respond more quickly than the police.

Within a few days of going live though, the app created enough awareness such that images of some perpetrators got the police to step up local presence.

Which brings me on to another thing. Many of us have security cameras. These are of little use other than capturing events as a record. They trigger far too frequently due to cats, passing traffic etc to be woken up several times a night - every night. Thieves seem to be less afraid of them now. Now though - networking all local cameras to a central monitoring point would price a more secure area. These scroats would soon get they idea that they can be tracked as they go round the area. Far greater chance if being picked up. Technically it is possible to do this.

all this gung-ho attitude is great, but remember why the police advise this:

I am sure all they had the same thoughts, and now their wives and children only have memories of their dead heroes.
Be careful. Defend your families and yourself, but are insured possessions worth a life?

These scumbags go out tooled up and prepared for more than just pinching the laptop.
Get in your house and the first thing they do is boil the kettle and look thought the kitchen cupboards, anyone coming downstairs can't use their baseball bat to stop a face full of boiling water or bleach.

Our kettle beeps when you put it on to boil. Thought it was a nuisance, but now....
So, their intent is GBH.

The real problem is that much of this is drug related and ultimately caused by social drug users that the whole food chain needs.

I understand that if you catch someone entering your home you're entitled to persuade them not to, but, if they're leaving you have to let them leave? That is, you can't shoot them in the back with a 12 bore ............................. much as they deserve it:(

Tony.
Reminds me of when we lived in the far east in the early 60s ( dad in the army) we had a dog who's previous owner was in the military police and he would let anybody into the house and just lie on the floor UNTIL they tried to leave then it was pin whoever up against the wall until he was told stop and he was alsation size

Nice to know there’s still people out there willing to take them on.
After dealing with these low life’s for 20yrs I’ve decided long ago that the BBBat under the bed is worth what ever the judge decides, however we do discuss what the first actions should be and that is not to confront until wife is safely behind locked door on the phone. If their downstairs then I’m at the top, they have to come up which is big disadvantage, let them have what ever they want cos whilst the wife or other family are in the house the confrontation has to be started by them only, not me, if on my own I’ll shout them to please take the tele cos I’m fed up watching Sherlock Holmes. You get my drift.
In twenty years I never met one that I would give a second chance. Sadly sadly says it all really.

RHA,Roy.

PS: even at coming up to my 71st birthday I couldn’t stand by and watch a child, woman or older citizen getting a beating.

It's great to hear everyone's views.

I also spent some time giving out advice to people, crime prevention, what to do if something's going on etc etc...

Did I heed my own advice?

No, when I saw some scumbag in MY car I was out there without thinking.

Looking back at it now, I should have waited inside for the Police to turn up, then go out and assist them, maybe even just let them deal as they have the equipment to defend them selves.

Just waiting for a call from them now, we have the mobile phone, so just time before they pick him up.

I'm expecting him to make a complaint of assault against me, so I guess I'll end up in the custody block I used to work in.

If someone were to break into my house they would be on the wrong end of my samurai sword. We would then take it from there.:(

My best mate who sadly passed away a couple of years ago was as hard as the rest of them. But he was also a professional bloke and respected community figure.

He kept a baseball bat by his front door. But next to it he had a ball & glove. Because they were just there for him to play with right?
