Long story short,

I tackled a guy at 2am this morning on my drive, he was going through my car.

Would have kept hold of him but he had a mate.

Police said I shouldn't have.

What would others do?

Good end to it all though as he dropped his phone in our scuffle, along with other loot from other peoples cars.

Good for you for having a go, I'd do the same although I do understand the perils of tangling with a younger guy. The police will always advise to avoid confrontation but our local police would turn a blind eye unless you took retribution a little too far.

A brave foolhardy thing to do as the scumbag could have had a weapon , but as you have his phone pass to police who will hunt him down arrest him and he will end up in jail ( I don't think so)

Seriously although tackling these thieves is your first instinct your first priority is to stay safe for your family and yourself to many people have been injured or lost their lives trying to save their cars

I'd do the same as you , I think nearly everyone would do , good for you , why do some people think they can do this and get away with it :p

The Police are right in there advice as they don't want you to be a stat. HOWEVER, you'd likely never see your stuff again so having a go is a good thing by me. I wouldn't be able to contain myself, there's no point in asking these pond life to leave alone so maximum attack would be my option. Sadly that brings into play 'reasonable' force so I'd be stuffed. That said, I do live in the middle of nowhere and the Lakes is a big baron place .......

Where’s a tazer when you need one !!!!:p

I'm afraid I'm straight in and think about the consequences later. I've had Jue in tears in the past after confronting people and not thinking about what may happen. I've always been the same, I loath thieves and they deserve all they get in my book.
Rightly or wrongly it's a pat on the back from me Tim.

Thanks for the replies, I know their advice is good, but in that moment I didn't think it through, just acted.

It's been years since I've had a decent adrenaline rush, it actually felt great afterwards.

The Police were lovely, but so young!!!!

How desperate has someone got to be to steal an umbrella, and phone leads?

Because they can , aided buy the cps ( criminal protection society)

Likely to be drug addicts getting enough to sell for their next fix. Sad but true I'm afraid.

On the hunt for laptops and other such stuff. A guy some years ago ran live leads to the underneath of his door handle in his Cossie as he was p***** off with continuous break in attempts. It worked and the pond life complained but got told to sling their hook by the authorities. Not too sure that you'd get away with it today if Jason (Susan on Tuesdays) 'I'm identifying as a rich tea biscuit eating giraffe' tried it

Sadly its the way things are locally to me on FB there is a vigilante group on the look out for there local area been there months.
I was run into and they drove off took pics and other car keys. " They had spare set in the car" police informed but never saw a police person just receptionist who took a statement. :-(

Probably best to scare them and not hold on.

Although have to say I didn't follow that advice when I had my phone stolen in London. In the heat of the moment I gave chase and tried to hunt them through London estates.

Not my best idea!

Our neighbour was broken into on Friday, whilst he was away, and they got all car keys. The guy opposite heard the car alarm going off but fortunatley didn't get out of his gate in time to stop they stealing the AUDI S3 as I am sure they would have just run him over. Trashed his house looking for the car keys and got in by breaking the glass in the patio windows.
Again Police advice is don't challenge them especially on you own.

I have done similar on 2 occasions, one a woman was in Boots in a squat position with an Easter in both hands, her purse was under her arm, A guy grabbed the purse with such force it spun her around and onto her back, I acted without thought and gave chase, after a couple of hundred yards I realised how big he was but almost had him so no stopping, I tripped him and bundled him down with me on top, one knee on his chest and the other in his throat, luckily we had passed a police woman during the chase, she approached and I let him up, as she was cuffing him he pulled away and ran, I followed and took him down a second time, by then there was police everywhere, I ended up in court as a witness and got "highly commended by the judge"

The second occasion was, I was passing a jewlers in the town centre and all hell broke loose, there was banging and crashing and the window displays where getting thrown all over or so it appeared, by the time I realised what was going on 2 guys came running out of the shop, again without thought I dropped my bags and chased, they split and I followed one down an ally, the problem arose when we got so far down it was gated, thats when I thought oh s*** and he threatened me with a knife, I should have walked away but I just had to follow through, I took him down and got all the stolen gear off him, looking back this was probably the most stupid thing I have done

Sadly this is getting all too common, it's one of the reasons in the End I sold my TTRS, a car that I loved.

Get a dog, if that doesn't work use the wife.
