Time for an overhaul of my 1.9 '98 BMW Z3 Individual

where about on the car is this ??
been out looking at my 1.9 and can’t find it

Maybe there was some kind of clip with nut attached something like this and it dropped off under the car.

Maybe put the bolt in from underneath and put a nut on from the top to hold the bolt in place. Then slot the cable onto the bolt followed by another nut to tighten it up.

c
the clip option might be worth a shot..

Unfortunately, I can’t post photos atm but on mine, the bolt is captured by the webbing on the underside of the casting with a nut on the upper side.

Hi Matt , I can’t upload any pictures
either , but mine has a nut and bolt with the nut at the top on the engine mount on the left side of the engine looking from the front ( exhaust manifold side)

thanls @Duncodin @ChrisD and @Mazza ...I'm going to try putting the bolt in from the underside as the flat faces will fit the web, maybe a couple of spots of superglue to hold it then try a nut from above...

Want me to lay under the car and put a finger on the bolt to hold it in place while you tighten it up ? =))

Push it in from underneath and hold it with a finger . . The shoulders on the hex head will stop it turning as you turn the nut from above. . . Or something like that.
yeah I've got to the point (after much swearing) where I could get the bolt in the flange with an extendable magnet, get it so I could hold it there with the tip of my finger but if I remotely even breathed it would drop out. Hence I'm exploring a bit of superglue

push the bolt up from underneath and hold it in place with a lump of blue tack then carefully put the earth cable and nut on from the top ???

that's exactly what I'm going try nexr mate. I tried with a bit of wood and my telescopic pencil magnet....I got to a point where I got so fed up I chucked my tools in the garage and resorted to alcohol

EARTH STRAP 0 ......MATT 1.... yeeeeeeehaaaaaaaa

ok a new day with a clearer head and far less angry.... and we got there !!!

took n what you guys said but fettled it a bit..... using a more sturdy telescopic magnet, held the bolt head firmly on the magnet. Fed it up through the gap in the front subframe and wishbone... got it so the bolt went in the hole then using the fingers on my other hand to turn it so it sat in the web (so it doesn't turn). whilst holding it with a finger tip, I re attached the magnet and pulled it so it was now touching the ground. Now I have the bolt "braced" in position

Then with a ratchet with two extension bars on I grabbed a 13mm socket, stuffed the inside edges with bits of kitchen paper and forced the nut in... (to stop it falling out)... then fed it down and managed to catch a thread.... then we were on a roll...

So with that great success ... just need to get the car to start !.....

I get the same old Errors.... "Terminal 30 Not Ok" on key position 1 and key position 2.... but interestingly there's no drop in voltage.

measured at the jump posts in the engine bay, and voltage in the boot was 12,6v with no key

No key - 12.6v
Position 1 - 12.6v
Position 2 - 12.6v
Cranking - 9v

Google and AI are trying to tell me there's 12v being dumped somewhere which is why it won't fire. With the ICV and TPS disconnected the engine will sometimes fire for about 4 seconds and then stop. Apparently this is the ECU shutting off the injectors.

Radio works though... and retained all the stations !

A KL30 error indicates that the permanent supply to the engine control unit is at fault. I’d start at the fuse box. My Bentley manual shows the permanent supply coming in via fuse 18 - check there’s always 12V on both sides of the fuse. This line goes to the MAF (pin 3) so that’s an easy place to check that the voltage is stable. Check all other earth points are good also. Good luck with chasing it down!

thanks @ChrisD .. I'm getting a healthy 12.6v everywhere, when I crank it drops to 10v or a bit below. I've swapped the EWS relay with the unloader relay and still nothing. It only fires briefly when I unplug the ICV and TPS plugs then shuts down. really bugging me now
