I took my tank straps off today Faheem and they are quite heavily rusted but still solid so they are going to the powder coaters

How are you supporting the tank now that you've removed the straps? My mistake is that I've got 30 litres or so of petrol left in my tank!

Are you replacing all the nuts and bolts too @Sean d? I'm in the process of putting together a list of what I'd like to replace using realoem and the likes and I think this may get really expensive really quickly! =))

Andy cheats, everything gets cut off. Look in the picture =))
Not ‘everything’ but yes, the brake pipes, handbrake cable and long beam pins got cut.

I’d like to see the whole lot get done properly!

Tried again with my bolt extractor kit but the 13mm doesn't grip tight enough around the head so just ends up damaging the outside of the allen bolt. Even tried a torx socket but a T40 is too loose and a t45 wont go in (don't want to damage it anymore so haven't tried hammerring)

@Brian4 will be coming over to help with the allen bolt tomorrow. Fingers crossed it comes out.

If all else fails what would happen if i tried to drill the head of the bolt off and try to unscrew the threads with a pair of vice grips?

That would work fine if you have the access, I have a dremel with a bendy head for these occasions. Problem overcome in 30 seconds should it happen again. 30 + zeds rebuilt and its not happened since =))

Get an easy out mate, they are only 8mm and not that tight, I think Robert @mrscalex did something similar

Is this what you mean by the easy outs @Sean d?

I bought this set off some seller in China a year or so ago but have never had to use it so really not sure of the quality or even how to use these things are but I'll bang it on YouTube and hopefully get an idea of how they're used.

but like Lee says one of my issues might still be access being that the bolt is right next to the fuel tank!

Yes mate, left handed thread and if they are any good they will bite in hard and do the job

I used an Irwin Bolt Grip as has already been tried I believe. But the difference may be I went straight to it without trying anything else. So it was a good tight fit.

I nearly used an easi-out on a broken thermostat bolt. But they are notorious for breaking off. So I ended up drilling the bolt out.

You may struggle with room with those Faheem. The idea is you put the size tool to require for your job into the chuck of a drill and use it to drill a hole exactly the right size for the left hand threaded easy out on the other end of that same tool. Hope that makes sense. Did you buy some flat jawed Mole grips? That may be the next best option mate.

Tony.

Its a bit awkward to get mole grips in pal, I think you could use and easy out as the hole is already there

Cheers @t-tony the allen bolts I'm referring to are right next to the fuel tank on my zed, don't know if the position of the fuel tank in relation to the allen bolts will be the same on the M Coupe.

Well, @Brian4 came along today and kindly offered his services.

Using a spline socket set Brian was able to get the allen bolt out at which point I was surprised and extremely happy!! - after this we had the diff bolt to undo and the whole rear came apart nicely.

Brian then helped get everything apart - trailing arm separated from the beam and then the rear axle separated from the diff.

So everything is back home and currently waiting to be stripped down, painted and then have new bushes fitted.

We got the offending bolts out today. I end up hammering a 6mm spline bit into the hex hole so a mixture of heavy hammer blows and the grip of the spline was enough to get the bolt released. The other 6mm hex came off with the proper bit after cleaning the hole out.
Got the carrier dropped easily enough, got to get the balance point right to put it back.
Got all the other bolts out brute force and ignorance as usual for me.
Tank straps look ok just need a clean up and paint.
Good afternoon and great hospitality thanks @Faheem .
