Done a bit of digging this evening, they are both cross compatible but you will need the matching prop and gear linkage because they vary in lengths
The ZF box is a well know box and used on alot of cars, apparently has a rated to 1000bhp the Getrag is a little more delicate but for what I use it for should be ok.
I might also look into the cost of getting the ZF rebuilt just so we know for future.

Hardtops on, dropping it off at the painters after work. M bumper is ready to rock n roll, just waiting on clips and brackets to arrive before fitting.
Will look the dogs with the HT on mate.

I've also left the 2.2 badge on to confuse people

Thought I best close out this thread. It's been a real interesting build and I / We have learnt so much about how these cars go together now. She's now all back together, last of the soldering sorted at the weekend so now have working fans and aircon. Attended the first show of the year with it at Sherbourne Castle, she performed faultless chasing the M3's and Z4M's the gearing has really made a difference to keeping up she will never be able to out do the S50/S54 platform but with some fancy driving you can happily keep pace in the twisties.
The next part of the project has lead me to some RnD work with the Idle system and throttle response, a particular characteristic with the M52/54 engine so I'll do a new thread about my findings. Watch this space.

Thanks for the thread Lee. Very interesting swap. Especially keeping the 2.2 diff ratio with the 2.8. Must be great fun to push through the bends. After all keeping up with Ms at the top end will only interest the boys in blue.

It will do on paper but the reality of it you wont notice. I've still been up to 140 with still 2k to go.
Quite a good result Lee, in reality the midrange overtaking speeds must be such an improvement over stock and as you have found out able to keep tabs with the M variant. Not to many place to get away top end speed these days apart from a track day and a clear conscience
