#ZedShed Project - Imola Z3M

Nice one. Pick mine up Monday, can't wait :banghead:

So she's stripped but the sills were not good so I have two new ones to go with her to the paint shop. BUT what was she like under those rotten sills? Well it could have been worse, the sills are toast as suspected but the inner sills only had surface rust which was quickly taken care of, then a good coat of metal stabiliser put on and left to dry over night.

Next several coats of Zinc primer and looking like new again. Next job is to Waxoyl (NB other brands of wax protection products are available ;)) the inside of the inner sills with aerosol Waxoyl and when shes back from the sprayers I'll Waxoyl the outside of the inner sill, the inside of the outer sills and have the wings off and do behind those too.

Not to scare anyone but the rear of the sills were crammed tight with muck for about 6 inch's, if you've never had them off and your sills are still in fair condition you may want to consider a winter project.

Good work Niall. She will be a real show stopper when she's done. You must be really pleased with it.

The ends of my sills are not worth salvaging either and after collecting a few sills I’ve decided to get some new ones. My off side wing is bad to but have two new panels for the front and some excellent rears and bonnet all painted up in storage to go on after the new roof is fitted.

I hope I have only a similar story or less underneath when it comes to swap them all over. @Nodzed are you going to use Por 15 over your inner sill? From what I understand it reacts against water, but I suppose the sills should come off annually to clear the crap out.

If I knew what POR 15 was I may consider it :D No good old fashion Waxoyl for me its always done a sterling job, inject it into the sills through the holes so the inside of the box section is fully coated, then give the outside about 5 coats letting it dry in between, the the same on the inside of the outer sill. The underside, behind the wings and arches will get the same treatment before she goes back on the road.

POR15 is what I used on my sills, however yours looks more OEM

Had a read on the tinternet, looks like good stuff. No reason I guess you can use that then top with zinc for the OEM look??

On topic here but maybe just slightly off........ Could you give me an idiot's guide to removing the sill covers please? Fank you :)

You can paint over some por15 stuff.

It goes on like concrete it's so hard

Can you still get new sill covers, I've been keeping an eye on ebay hoping a good pair will turn up.

Yup, got a pair from the BMW main dealer, arrived less than 24hrs after ordering. I think I paid £110 a side (Roadster)

I'm hoping to remove my sills this winter and have a good look at them (and what's behind them) good to know I can get new ones if needed.
