I just paid 1030 for a 1.9 97 plate 120k on the clock completely rust free.
That’s push bike money for a nice summer fun car. But I bet there will be a fair bit of rust underneath.

I'm on a few tvp (van) forums and it always used to shock me how people always seem to try and push the values down on their vans.

It seems the same on here. Some of the low prices on here seem crazy. Yes there are bargains to be had but those prices aren't the norm.

They are the norm in the real world, we see hyper inflated prices on lots of low mileage Z3's but they sit around on the sale sites for months, a few months ago I paid £700 for a 2.8 with 130k but has full dealer history, it is getting a full restoration and rebuild from the bottom up and so far I have spent 2k on parts, however if I had purchased a lower mileage tidy Z it would still need all the suspension components replacing.

I was going by prices sold on eBay. As to say, there are bargains to be had. But most of the time those are in remote areas.

With seats going for £400 and door cards £150, soon there will be no z3s left of the road.

If they were that cheap to buy then the price of second hand parts needs to nose dive

As for Zed prices falling most car used car prices seem to be falling, due to the uncertain future lately off the dreded electric car era due on us soon(apperently)most Zeds were well looked after, and most aren't over 20 years old yet,but Im Sure when there over 25 years old the prices should start to turn a little.as for ugly nope I can't buy into that,I was in a Monsel heads tiny car park in the Peak District yesterday having half a lager enjoying the stunning view ,I looked around to see people looking at my Zed admiring it,even young kids and they don't lie, sure some off the zeds competitors at the time were good,I think my mk1 Audi TT 3.2 dsg was the most beautiful car to look at,but when it come to driving and owning a well sorted Zed 3 ,nothing can compare to it ,value and low running costs are a big bonus to a Zed owner,I get far more smiles per miles as I've ever done driving anything over the last decade off any car, sometimes money can't buy you happiness, but my little green machine sure does.
Jimmy.

Spot on there Sean.

Then add in neglected service items and smaller items like brakes, brake pipes, water pump, thermostat, fuel filter, spark plugs, aerial grommet, window sliders, rear window, coolant, brake fluid, tyres, handbrake, wheel sensors which all more often than not need changing regardless of mileage.

I keep thinking I paid too much for my 3.0 with prices falling. The reality is I still did the right thing buying an unfinished project when I did as I’d rather spend £2k on parts on a decent cheap car than a ‘tidy’ £6k car as the final spend will be less.

Add to that, you and @Sean d, will have the satisfaction and security of the knowledge that you did the work yourselves and more importantly to what standard.

"thinking I paid too much for my 3.0 with prices falling" .......... ain't that just life though Rob?

They do say "If hindsight was 20-20" ;) We can all be smart looking over our shoulders mate.

Tony.

The majority of cars depreciate in value. Z3 depreciation must be the lowest of most, especially given the lowish starting price. If it appreciates, well and good. Relax folks.:)

Yes. My point was a few hundred extra quid is not greatly material when you are going to town on a car you intend to keep :)

And prices will be back up next year. I blame the terrible Spring we had as Feb/Mar is the main buying time for the summer.

Other factors like Brexit, lack of wage increases, threat of base rate rise and increasing fuel prices are probably not helping either.

There are still loads of new members joining this forum which tells me interest in Z3s is still good. And as it’s such good value for money the long term prospects remain positive.

I’m not interested in Z3s an investment but on the other hand prices need to tickle upwards to counter inflation.

Who cares if the prices fall?
only those who are intending to sell on, or those that think they may have overpaid. (and if you do think that.... then you probably have)

It's because they are cheap, that they get scrapped easier and parts become readily available.
Not all seats go for £400 only the rarer sports (and more expensive M seats).
and £400 is a real bargain compared to other car seats out there.

I didn't buy mine to sell on, or hope that it either retained it's value or made money.
I bought it for enjoyment and a hobby.
Some people spend more on fags and beer..... but that's their choice.

I lost £8k on a brand new car after 18 months, I will never lose that on my Zed even if I scrapped it, but even if I did I would still value the enjoyment more than worrying about the worth of the car.

And I could buy another for £1500 and start all over again.

To me, the bottom falling out of the market is absolutely brilliant news... bring it on

Each to his own. If you don't care that's fine.

I see pros and cons of the situation rather than being bothered about it or thinking it's a good thing.

But if nothing else a discussion is healthy because it could help someone time a purchase before the market goes back up. That sounds like a worthwhile thing to me as it leaves more cash in your pocket to do the car up.

If values drop then there is a greater chance of your pride and joy being written off after I minor accident.

After all the work we put in, a lot of people simply don't want to start again

Or buy it back and fix it yourself, or just buy another cheap one and swap the bits over. That's all part of my enjoyment.

You only have to read Dave's progress thread to see proof of that and his old car wasn't a scrapper. He bought well and made himself a great car.

Here in the States I can sell my 2001 2.5l Z3, with about 80,000 miles for about $8,000. It is red and the body is perfect. It has never been driven in the winter and has very little underbody rust. I just changed out the drive shaft damper and bearing support for about $450. I drives like a dream. Too bad I didn't pick up a Z8 when they were selling for just over $40,000. By the way, I put in good speakers and a new HK sub driver. I has a Sony multi-channel SACD receiver. Very rare. Likely the only Z3 with that setup.

I agree that only the 2.8/3.0 and m will go up.

Just more desirable. All the lower engines that are sports will get broke for parts as strangely they are worth more in bits than whole

My 2.2 is only valued at £1500 max to sell private as I've been offered just less than that a couple of times by breakers. Just for parts as car itself isn't very good
