Rebody Pingu's Kit Car Project

Found something interesting under the carpets...

Why would a 1998 car have 2001 carpets?

Ah - thats because whoever had the car before me had superglued strips of office carpet onto the original carpet in a shocking attempt to create an ///M striped carpet. When I removed the carpet strips the original carpets were so badly damaged with the glue that they had to be replaced

God, that’s hideous! :wtf::wtf:

Yep - I put up with it for about 3 years unbelievably before stripping the car back to pretty much how Pingu has it currently - well the insides obviously and then retro fitting the replacement carpet and extended leather on all the dash etc just before we did the DTEC tour a few years ago. Still miss that car but Gary is doing a fantastic job !!

Did you keep it? I quite like it.

OMFG  :wideyed:o_O.

All is explained.

You did a good job of getting rid of the old glue. There was no trace of what had gone before - thank God

Just watching the videos Gary, it would be interesting to know where the water ingress had come from. When I stripped down the entire interior before DTEC the interior was just a shell like you have it now and while replacing the ruined carpets with the new ones I noticed that there was water in there. With everything removed it was the perfect time to close the roof and doors and put the hose on it.

What I found was that there was only 1 place that the water was entering the cabin, and that was halfway down the A pillar. If you look at the picture below you can see an area where the shape of the rubber seal changes and when the door is closed you can see it changes how it pushes the rubber against the window. What I found was that water was running along the edge of rubber and window as expected but was managing to ingress at this point and run down to the bottom of the window and down behind the side of the dash and behind where the floor speaker is and gather under the carpets.

To cure this I put a little extra butyl inside the rubber seal to push it harder against the door window and that cured the problem so it might be worth you testing it again at some point in the future to find out if that fix is still working or if the water was getting in somewhere else (Note the roof is pretty new and wasn't leaking when I tested it at any of the joins).

My car leaks when parked on a downslope, but not on the level or when on an upslope.

Any damage (no matter how minor) to the door or roof seals (or roof seal sections) that don't meet can result in water ingress.

Sounds like a friend of mine who has a Lotus Elise which has a leaky roof - but only when the car is moving!!! Always makes me chuckle when I speak to him about it as you kinda take for granted that motion is a fundamental requirement of a car =))

Yep. Mine does that, but only the passenger gets wet, so it's not an issue :ymdevil: .

Oh my eyes! That can’t be unseen!!!

The body might be out of the mould at the end of next week. I really need to pull my finger out and get the rolling chassis sorted.

It's having to be done on the driveway now, as the rent for the workshop went from £500 to £700pcm, so I just told him to do one. It might have been better to just pay the extra, but there is a difference between pi$$ taking and taking the pi$$.

I can imagine he’ll be in contact soon =)) .

He can try. Blocked his number and he doesn't know where I live. I'm sure he could find out if he wants, but it wouldn't be worth his trouble.

It wasn't anything dangerous. In fact, quite the opposite. Cut and taped wires inside the trunking. Wires cut short inside junction boxes and the wires inside the circuit box are now too short to reach the terminals :ymdevil: . It needs a complete rewire - just like I spent the first week doing.
