Great photo but being dense what am I looking at?
Its M42 (AKA) The great Orion Nebula. A Stellar nursery located in the sword of Orion to the unaided eye looks like a fuzzy star. under exposing the outer nebulosity would reveal a cluster of young stars in the bright central region.

Are these what we refer to as 'stars'? The sun I believe is basically a nuclear reaction with it's gravitational pull all that prevents burning matter from spreading and frying us. Are stars the same?

Simplified, yes..., you can see in that image where the gases have collapsed under gravity into the central area to coalesce into new stars, The nebula itself is estimated to be around 24 light years across, put into perspective our sun is 20 light minutes away , roughly..

A bit of cloud and moon dodging last night, but still managed 77 x 40 second images of the Fornax Cluster... Many galaxies in this image, Elliptical, they look like fuzzy stars, spirals, barred spirals and irregulars ... Interestingly the cluster is approximately 65,000,000 light years away, therefor the light we are seeing now left there when the dinosaurs were wobbling around the place... Look carefully how many can you see ?...

Santa came early, a new tracking mount and carbon fibre tripod . It can handle 15kg without a counterweight, does not need to be balanced, and slews at 6 degrees a second. Amazing really how technology advances. Anyway, now I,m guaranteed clouds or a bright moon, right through until xmas.

First night out with the new mount.. disgusting skies and a full moon, but results look promising for better skies.. Eta Carina, 1 hour total exposure time, over the top of a lit resort and an airport...The neighbors are probably thinking, "what that weirdo doing, sitting in a camp chair on his driveway at 3 in the morning drinking coffee ?"

I'm not sure this belongs alongside some of your masterpieces, but this is a photo I took last night.

For a bit of background, I have been overweight my entire adult life, but a few years ago was really getting into cycling as a means to lose weight and get fit. I was training for a 100 mile sportive when I was hit by a car - despite being decked out in reflective & fluro clothing and having lights on (even in daylight) and thankfully in this case - a helmet. The driver didn't stop and left me laying in the grass verge where I came to rest. Thankfully it was a busy road and the car behind them stopped for me. They gave me dashcam footage, but sadly it was not clear enough to get a reg. Anyway, I digress. My cycling came to a grinding halt that day, and although it only took a few months for my body to heal, the psychological damage has taken much (much) longer.

Last night was the first time since the accident that I have properly cycled on a main road! I didn't go far - partly because I am so unfit =)), but also because I am going to be sticking to bridleways and quiet roads, but a short blast on the A6 was actually quite exhilarating. And the anxiety/adrenaline coursing through me meant I was going so fast only a couple of cars passed me in that time

(PSA: Please be kind and considerate to cyclists. We're not all angry lycra-clad nazis who flout traffic laws. We're actually very vulnerable road users, and some of us are fellow Zed enthusiasts! 💖)

One hour exposure. Wow. That's sharp. I had to go back a few posts to look at your tracking mount.

They were broken down into individual 40 second exposures, mainly because the mucky sky, and live stacked as I shot them. but the guider was only making tiny corrections of sub arc seconds, but I suspect most of those were due to shooting close to horizon and the guide system trying to compensate for atmospheric refraction fluctuations.. But all in all , its a great unit, I look forward to using it more favorable conditions...
