My Z4 ........................... My Way (Part 2).

I bought some wheel decals a few weeks ago,

Over the last couple of days I've had a bit of heat on in the Shed and had the đźš— up on the lift and got them fitted.

I masked them off and gave them 3 coats of clear lacquer.

Just touching up some kerb rash on the left rear till I can get it done properly.

I tried them on the lip, and the next inner step, as I would've preferred that too but they would need to be printed on a radius.

This week's little project is another Christmas hangover. I got a wireless reversing camera after seeing one @gookah had fitted on Mrs G's car at Zedfest. I bought a Boscam K7 kit.

I fitted the camera one afternoon last week and getting the cable from the camera into the boot area behind the right rear light was no easy task, completed today.

The monitor is attached to the bottom of the screen with a sucker.

Using the coloured gauge at the green segment gives you approx. 1M space.
20230123_164947.webp

20230123_164923.webp

The yellow line gives you approx. 0.6M
20230123_165016.webp

20230123_164839.webp

and the red only 0.3M.

Having got it all connected I tried it out and although the monitor paired with the camera the camera didn't show an image on the monitor. I discovered that BMW applied too much paint for me to get a good ground on the rear light fixings. I simply fitted a "star" washer between the nut and the body to bite through the paint.
I just have to tidy up the wiring from the monitor to the supply now. The monitor is ignition fed and is in "stand-by" mode till you select reverse and then the camera sends the image to the monitor. Haven't tried it in the dark yet, . . . . . it was tea time.;)

I noticed soon after getting this Z4 that the n/s sill scuff plate was not totally secure when I cleaned the car, so today while I was at a loose end I decided to see what was wrong.
Turned out that 2 of the 4 trim clips were missing and that someone had used some inferior doubled sided tape to try to secure it.

I cleaned off the remnants of the tape from the sill and as much as I could from the trim itself. Leaving the 4 holes ready for new clips.

Trim was cleaned and some andyglym applied ready.

A look on REAL.Oem gave me the part numbers and a call to Sopers had some ordered for tomorrow (today) ready for Shirl to collect after a visit to the toothright. As per usual, and highlighted by @Mazza recently, even though the car has only 4 per side (and I only need 4) I have to buy 20. Some things never change. Cheaper on eBay but I'm impatient and didn't want to wait several days.

Tony.

Good job done Tony. I don't understand why some folks don't fix a simple job properly with the right parts. You guys now have spare clips so we all know who to contact for spares!;)

Shirl collected these yesterday.
20230208_113221.jpg

Having looked at the slots the clips go into I decided to put them all in line with the centre of the slots.

With them set out like that I could feel the ends of the clips go into the holes, they just needed a spank with my hand to lock them in.

Should last you a few more years Tony, just mind those high heals!;)

I received my Smart Top roof module back from Las Vegas last week, finally got it programmed last night and refitted it today. I need to revisit programming to alter a couple of bits, nothing of a job though.

Is Function 4 car-default (not module-default) set to 40kmh/25mph ?

I remember it was a kmh reading something above 20mph, I just keep it at the 20mph line and it opens and closes no bother.

Glad its back and working, good news !

Well this Monday morning it was blowing a gale and chucking it down so I decided to stay indoors today. In the garage that is. I noticed after washing the car on Saturday that the wheel balance weights on the outside of the wheel, behind the spokes sort of "stood out" so I decided to blend them in a bit so they were not so obvious.

After finishing cleaning the wheels with the car on my lift I masked round the weights and wiped them over with some carb. cleaner to remove any grease etc.

20230313_122709.jpg

Then I gave them a couple of coats of and aluminium silver paint which I've used on wheels since I had cars.

One other thing which caught my eye soon after I bought the car was the shut line and the body gap between the bonnet and the front bumper. Also the gap between the front edge of the bonnet and the top edge of the bumper was also a little too wide. So, today was the day.

I removed the rubber strip which stops water entering between bonnet and bumper (for the most part anyway). Several of the 7 were a little tight so I took them all out and cleaned the threads and oiled them before refitting. Once screwed in by hand and loosened a half turn I could position the bumper correctly to give a nice gap. Then all nipped up and the rubber strip replaced.

Giving a nice gap.
20230313_143344.jpg

To adjust the bumper to bonnet gap at the wheel arch you have to access the mounting bracket at the front of the wheel arch area, removing 1 x 10mm plastic nut, 2 x 8mm self tapping bolts and the bulb access cover.

And then also the N/S.

Not quite so easy to get a picture from that side and a little dark too.

A job well done that has been bugging me for ages.

Tony.

I sent this post to Elon Musk. Pretty sure he will share with his quality control team.

Great job Tony ( as usual !) :scorecard:
BTW Spalding Fasteners are very reasonable with cheap and quick postage should you need ss self tappers.
Sorry (again) but can't make the next Z shed - family here
Kind Regards
Brendan

That gap reduction is impressive Tony, a shame the level of professionalism isnt applied at the Factory.

Rest looks good too

I killed an hour late this afternoon giving the drivers seat some TLC. Did it just after I got it but not since till today. Autoglym Leather Cleaner followed by Leather Balm. Passenger seat and the rest tomorrow.
