Been finished and run to two events covered a couple of hundred miles and can confirm that on a quick run of 156mls I got an extra 4mpg and coming back with damaged front wheel sticking at 50-55mph I got an extra 6mpg, now the question is did the new air path of cold air make this happen, or did the two replaced split intake rubber boots do it or combination of both?????. Like to think the air path and home made enclosed filter box played a big part, especially now it's foam rubber top seals against the hood, as advised by Jim @oldercarman. Here's a pic of finished project. Rha,Roy.

@Rah look excellent and I'm sure with the colder more densely compacted air its a high percentage of your gain. Great idea you've come up with there!! Congrats JIM

@Rha You ever worked on Land Rovers... Looks like the kind of mod we used to make.. Hope it works..
Never actually worked on them as a fitter pg, but did maitainence and taught young lads to drive them for about ten years off and on, quite often getting stuck trying to follow the centurions and chieftains. Blooming good vehicle off road although not as good as the Stalwart.-------:bookworm:

I like your train of thought Zed but I hope it really doesn't keep the warmth IN just hope it keeps it OUT, cause I can't tell for sure unless I can find a way of monitoring the temp on the go, not only that it wouldn't look good on yer kitchen worktop covering yer teapot, or would it??????:rolleyes::rolleyes: =))
PS; been looking for your post on the Pipercross Filter can you help me out. Roy.

If you have access to INPA you can see the airflow temp but you would obviously need a before and after reading to make any real judgement.

Thanks Brian, like you say I'd have to have some before readings to start with, if I was marketing something like this the system monitoring equipment would be viable, as it's a home made project I'll just have to kid myself that it's all been worth while, I like the fact that I've managed to steal some air from the front kidney grill and only sorry I didn't think of this before ditching the OEM air box. Love to convince others to get the hacksaw out and buy a gutter end cap, would only take me about a hr to do it again and with a decent grinder half that. Roy.

There are so many factors to take into account to get accurate results it would be near impossible to do at home but not impossible for someone with the energy to tackle it! I can't see anything that you've done that wouldn't result in a cooler air charge entering the cylinders which allows more fuel to burn completely. That's why most cars will run better running in the cool dense air in the morning than they will in the heat of the day. Keep going you've got some great ideas. JIM

Thanks Jim, inner air box insulation and rubber boots next on the list.
Still waiting for Koni sport kit to come, it was promised by the end of the month, don't want to be fitting it in the cold so fingers crossed. Thought it was off the shelf order but I had to give them Vin number and other info so they can make it up at the factory, took me too long to make up my mind which kit otherwise would've been on by now. Be looking at the bushings while we're doing it, that's probably gonna slow things down a bit but at least the busy summer meets are nearly all out the way. Roy.:):):)

Update to the kitchen waist bin mod.
image.jpeg

Cut along the top and bottom line then bend shaded area towards the rad, this gives you the flat surface to mount
your scoop on plus an opening to allow the passage of air from kidney grill direct to the filter.

Sorry to say that the kitchen waste bin has now gone due to the fact that I managed to get hold of a used Simota kit, but it was a road worth navigating, it's taught me that if your keen enough to have a go then follow your instinct. Didn't light up the world but never the less made my day and at last I've found a way of getting/stealing some much needed IMO fresh free air almost direct to the filter (of the waste bin and now to the Simota) which I firmly believe BMW should have done, especially useful on the strangled 2.8tu engine. Now I'm going to try a further mod to increase the area of stollen kidney grill air. Z3M owners wanting more direct air into their Simota induction kit could benefit IMO from this mod, fitting a Simota tight up against the headlight IMO isn't getting the best direct and shortest feed to the filter, that's of course if your not happy with what you've allready got. Most owners will cringe at the thought of making a saw cut into the bodywork as I did on my 2.8 but think it can all be put back to oem if need be.
image.jpeg

The tape shows the air entry point and the short passage straight into the filter, nearly a ram effect at speed, the distance from the inlet to the filter is around 25inches with a slight left turn which I smoothed with the aid of some plastic damp course and decent glue. You can see with the bonnet closed that I've achieved around a 80mm scoop stollen from the kidney grill which after a few thousand mls hasn't effected the cooling, on the hottest day this year in traffic the guage never moved off normal.
image.jpeg

Now with the Simota kit fitted there's been a small gain from the kitchen bin and it does look more tidy, sound is more pleasing. The engine definately likes the Simota better cos it picks up just that bit more lively. Fuel consumption has improved from 25 to 29 on light thottle openings ( Sunday driver mode).
image.jpeg

If I ever get a Z3M this is the first mod I'll do along with the Somota kit.

Think you may be wondering what the little box is on the right in last pic.
It's a Eco/power box which fools the air maf sensor into thinking that the engine is getting more air than it really is which richens the mixture when ever you plant your right foot to the floor, main asset is it will give me 35+mpg if turned to full economy with the performance of a 1300cc, so it's left in full power mode constantly and gives me 19-21mpg and the performance of a Z3 2.8tu (with a gizmo box but empty wallet). It will be discarded when I fit my 330i induction manifold and remap.
