After a long winter the Coupe is ready for another season :) I'm very happy with the work over the winter - just all of the underside to do now!

The car's currently in for an inspection II with DMWorx (bmw specialist). The valve clearances are being done too, with a full inspection and write up of the whole car.

Whilst it was in the owner suggested I have a compression and leak down test, as he's seen a few S50s with poor readings. I was worried!

All came up clean, very respectable numbers across the board and no outliers. Whilst it's there he's also taking CO readings and balancing the injector duration. Not many know what this is or how to do it, he's very thorough.

Just got the car back and have to say I'm very impressed. Work done:

  • Oil & oil filter change
  • Diff oil change
  • Gearbox oil changed
  • Replaced AC belt
  • Air filter replaced
  • Brakes removed and cleaned down
  • ABS sensor repaired
  • Fixed a connector to the side light
  • Valve clearances checked and changed shims
  • Lead down test (OK)
  • Compression test (OK)
  • Injector duration balanced based on individual cylinder CO readings

As well as a general inspection with things that need to be looked at

I only drove the car back through 30s and 40s, in the wet, so no full pulls but I can already tell that the engine is much smoother. The exhaust used to burble on idle and that is now all gone. Fully recommend having those adjustments done and can't recommend DMWorx (Aylesbury) enough - ask for Russ

Good to hear Martin. I'll be booking mine in for a no.2 and general inspection once the panels are on. Guessing that was around £500 worth all in?

You can multiply it.... but the M cars need a lot more fettling to keep sweet

Wow - I've just read through all of this start to finish... Amazing work and some great tips picked up - particularly on corrosion treatment which I'll be looking at for mine over coming weeks. Lovely car Martin, well done!

interesting to hear that POR15 has gone from the treatment of choice, to a waste of money.
At one time, every thread I saw, seemed to have someone saying "must use POR15".
Must have been the fashion 12 months ago.


Hammerite, Waxoyl and Kurust is still the way forward,

sod all these new clever chemical named snake oils, made in the house of L'Oreal with Miscella Water, Argan oil and other such nonsense:

Looked under my car last week to check on a steering fluid leak but also noticed there is the start of some corrosion on the front part of the sills just behind front wheels (Outers look fine)... will be taking the outer sills off in coming weeks to see what I need to do to stop this spreading... Hammerite, Waxoyl and Kurust is what I was intending as have used these products in past ... Anyone have any better suggestions please? Cant seem to find anything with Argan oil in it haha...

Decided it was about time to fit the new KWV3 suspension. I ordered these in July last year and received them in September, so they've been sat in the boot of the car for around 6 months.

The existing suspension is KWV3 too, but they are the old style from before 2007. I could feel that the car was quite stiff / bouncy and so the dampers were probably past their best.

I got the rear set done today, using Rogue Engineering rear top mounts so that they're easier to swap in future. Getting the rear interior out is a major pain, so I'm glad that I should NEVER have to do that again!

I took it for a very quick spin and I can already tell that there's a huge difference. I can't wait to get the front on (tomorrow) and take it for a longer drive once this is all over!
