Here comes the white stuff.

Had a lie in this morning, got to work at 5
5... work at 5.... there's only one 5 in the day Dave and it aint in the morning:D

Pleased to hear Gary is OK Tony

Thank you Dave.

Tony.

We're now getting snow and rain at the moment....... :p
It's meant to be -5 by Monday :(

Yes he's ok thank you Dave. I asked if he felt any stiffness this morning, I did after I had an accident years ago, but he said his shoulders were a little sore otherwise ok.

Tony.
Glad he's okay Tony and we haven't had a stiffie thread for quite a while! I had a bad one when we were rear ended, that's another story, and broke a bone, another story, in my neck! JIM

That's what I suffered Jim, I was stationary waiting to turn right in my old Granada Ghia and this kid in a 4x4 pick up thrutched me up the boot.

Tony.

ps. "Thrutched" is a Blaster Bates terminology.

We were on our way into Winnipeg with one son and two friends of his. We stopped at a light and could hear sirens coming from all directions. Heard a screech of brakes for a split second and we were hit. Looked over and couldn't see my wife, she had hit the dash with her knees and the seat broke off it's mounts and she was lying still strapped in it on her back. Luckily the three kids were small enough their heads were below the headrests. I helped my wife get unbuckled and she climbed out of the car. Just as she did a guy walked past our car carrying a shotgun and hijacked the car in front of us asking the driver if he " was ready to die that day". The guy jumped in the car and drove away. Suddenly were were surrounded by police cars from every direction. I couldn't turn my head so they got an ambulance and a police officer rode to the hospital with me which was only a few blocks away. They called my Dad who lived close by and he picked up Joan and the kids. Found out that the guy that hit us, they figure he was doing about 50mph and hit the brakes for 5 ft before he hit us, had robbed a drugstore and drank down a couple of bottles of morphine and popped a handful of pills. Then he hijacked a car in the parking lot. He dropped about 20 pill bottles as he walked from the first hijacked car he hit us with on his way to the second. My wife had to attend his trial as she could identify some of the pill bottles he dropped. I ended up with a broken bone in my neck and whiplash. Joan went back to our car and unbelievable as it would seem the trunk opened and closed and all the doors opened and closed properly. 84 Volvo sedan written off but still drivable!! JIM

Volvo's famous for their strength Jim, not sure how the newer models would stand up against the older ones though. Perhaps may not be driveable but "crumple" technology these days saves injury at the cost of the vehicle, which is easy to replace.

Tony.

I have always thought... If they built cars with the thickness of the older cars.. (My early Ford MK IV Zodiac had thick steel... a two person job to replace a front wing )... with the modern rustproofing we have.. They would all go out of business as you would never need to buy a new car.. As for crumple zones.. well that was what you hit...

There are on newer Peugeot and Citroen models there is an aluminium brace between the front "bumper" and the front subframe. These are pre -bent to encourage deformation, so that they bend in the middle and bend upwards to allow the front end of the car to collapse under itself. I will take some pictures to show you if I remember.

Tony.

All to meet the Euro Encap5 standards.. Should that be Euro End Scrap 5... standard... How to get cars replaced on a regular basis.. That includes insurance companies who will write a car off quicker than getting a second quote to repair it. So much for being environmentally friendly..

For a car to be designed with bars that are already creased.. thats sad.. When my original BMW got hit hard across the front, the airbags did not inflate but the cars engine was twisted. I am glad to say that the main safety cage held up. So even for a 15 year old plus design. It worked. Having seen how thin modern cars are, my new VW CC is light a bit of stressed kitchen foil !!.. I am glad they have safety cells. I would never buy one myself as I would think the first accident and it would be written off.

Merc A-Class (piece of crap) if you have a head on, the engine gets pushed down under the car, as I have said before, concept great, product not.

But as I said they put human life ahead of cars. That's got to be right?

Tony.

Agreed @t-tony Having more rigid cars is self defeating, the crumple zone absorbes and dissipates massive energy. This reduces what is refered to as "Kinematics", this is when you hit a solid object at speed and stop instantly, you then hit something acrueing injuries to your external body ( though less so with the multiple in-car safety systems) and your internals keep going at the previous speed and as a result your internal organs have a massive impact against your rib cage and skull. Massive internal bleeding occurs as a result and you die, sometimes with minimal external markings. Also you may have major trauma to your "C" spine which may sever leaving you as a quadraplegic.

Sorry about that, drive safe peeps.

Smart car tridion safety cell. These cars were built for nipping around town, not for motorways but people do it anyway.

I've seen Smart cars on the freeways in Florida Mike and it looks scary to me. A Kia Soul is a reasonably sized car here in the UK but they're "small" over there but still make a Smart look tiny by comparison.

Yeah, agreed Mike. Wouldn't drive a Smart car further than my drive if I'm honest. Just so small that my brain tells me I'm in trouble.

I owned one, great for in town but that's it (even though they do 140 km ph max) Ever seen the crash test done on one of these things? That is where the "Kinematics" come into play.
