When I was looking I passed a few emails with "Longline". They offer 3 different tones. Standard pipe, Aston Martin V8 and TVR Griffith. He Said over 90% go for the middle option and are very happy with it as it gives a nice tone when under power but it's not to much of a drone when cruising.
Thanks mate for that i still can't make my mind up but i am really glad i asked for people's advise on this cus £330 is a lot to spend so i want to get it right.Cancelled my booking at mr tyre for now. Hows the the holiday going ?

I think the Subaru Imprezza has the best exhaust note, a very nice burble when plodding along. Sounds menacing.

Thanks Dino now that sounds more like it. It's a cat back system i want to do as well. may postpone my plan and research a bit more.
What I'd suggest is getting to some meets or meeting up with some members and listening to various systems from the INSIDE of the car.
The YouTube clips only tell you the outside sounds and how good/bad the mic on the video is. There is even a clip of my own car by te previous owner out there but doesn't do it justice.
There are loads of supersprint exhaust clips but from the driving seat my car sounds quite different from what the video clips sound like.
I'm near Canterbury, Kent, you welcome to pop in for a listen.

Also worth noting that some 2.8's have a single pipe after the cat (like mine) and others have dual pipes I believe and that can affect the sound as an 'X' pipe can be fitted. I'm not sure exactly what it's all about just that they seem to sound a bit different to my hear.

There is also the bypass valve you can fit to any system and change volume at the push of a button.

This post has the details. I have also seen a high quality looking version built in Netherlands I think, about 3-400 pounds vs 100 ish for this version.
Also popular in Aus with the V8 cars.

I'd love to fit one when I have that kind of cash lying about, makes it a mini TVR (a car if love tow own for noise alone!)
Here is a clip of a 2.8 Z3 with that bypass valve fitted but I think still uses the middle box, sounds like a mini TVR.
Turn up the volume!

The x pipe is there to balance the pressures between the two pipes but as the twins come off a single cat I don't really think it's a necessity to have an x pipe. If you ran dual cats then it for sure is required and to find out where to place it you paint the pipes and run the car to burn off the paint. Where it stops burning would be where you'd put the balance tube. JIM

Thanks Dino i looked at a few you tube clips of varying types of exhaust including Supersprint but none of them were what i expected tbh but as you said there will be quite a difference in reality so i'l start paying more attention to what some of the members have on their Z's at the cruse/meets i'l be going to next month. Mine has a single pipe after the cat cus i had a look after reading your post earlier.A big thank you for the offer to have a listen to yours but it's a fair old treck from here in Nottingham :meh: otherwise i'd take you up on the offer. We're catching a ferry from Portsmouth the 1st week in September but that's the wrong side of the south coast from you.

Jesus just looked at that link you posted....what a sound  but it's so loud. Love the exhaust note but i couldn't live with it on a long run i'd need ear plugs :meh:. Saw another clip with an Eisman fitted now that sounded fruity :D

It's a bypass valve that bypasses the rear box, operated from inside the car so you can just switch from whatever backbox you have (standard or not) to no backbox and back again as you wish...that's why I want one, I could switch from my Superaprint to mental as and when!

Eisenmann is also great stuff.
Reminds me that Remus did a backbox that had a manual flap to change the sound, think it was called 'Powersound'.

Or, if you just want a cut out you can simply buy one on eBay and put it in the exhaust pipe wherever but just before your backbox would likely be best noise wise!! Then you can buy the box you want and with the flick of a switch go crazy for as long as you can take it!! Used a lot in drag racers that mostly see street use. JIM

This bypass valve idea sounds interesting but i don't quite follow how it works, how does it bypass the back box ?

Basically it's a y pipe with a butterfly valve that controls flow to either the back box or not (so then straight out if a second exhaust outlet with no silencer).

This is a high quality looking version available in UK that I came across:

Further googling bright up this image that how's a very nice solution to running the unsilenced pipe:

Although in the Z3 I posted above he just ran the unsilenced pipe under the car and thus hidden retaining the stock tips totally unmodified.

Exactly @Dino D the way you handle it coming off the cut out is a matter of what you want and can be varied. But it is a fairly easy install and can be done DIY or at a muffler shop. JIM

Thanks Dino,i've done a bit more looking round on you tube which shed more light on it as well. It does look like a clever invention making it possible to change from standard to mental at the push of a button .

These are used, as I said on a lot of drag and track cars to save having to unbolt headers and tie up the pipes from dragging. Love the sound of that V10!! JIM

Standard to mental at the push of a button clearly illustrated in this video- e46 M3 with the V10 engine, careful how loud you have the volume set as it's really mental!

I need a bypass valve and a V10 in my life!!
OMG sounds similar to a F1 car when they used to have proper engines in them....bet his neighbors love him when he opens the bypass valve

So I've been looking into getting this and finding a quality producer.
Digging around the Internet and it appears that for road cars there are some issues to overcome. Fitment is not the issue.
The issue is with rattling/poor sealing when closed and seizing of the moving parts.
Some suggest the valve needs to come out during winter months to prevent corrosion.
Over in the U.S where this is popular there seems to be real mixed views on these..
But disappointed really as would like it in all year. Don't really want to spend on something that just ends up being a pain.

Will keep searching for a reliable one of it exists...
