Euro cruise disaster

Great to see some progress for you Gary. If you get to do a lot of other necessary jobs while it's apart, it will set you in good stead for the future. Keep up the good work mate. See you back on the road mate.

It is not looking too bad at this stage but unless I have missed something we still don't know where all that oil came out. There was certainly a lot of it when we stopped.

Good news Gary:thumbsup:, she'll be back on the road in no time:whistle:

Probably left the cap off like @N4LLY did the other day Mike......;)
I was messing with my z a few weeks back, a few seconds after I started it there was a horrendous noise, I s*** my pants, lifted the bonnet and I had left the cap off, must have been some sort of vacuum noise.

Good work Ratty me old mate, that means you will have it back together in no time and come over here for next years Limborit again.

Mike, I'll be there even if I've gotta get me bike out

Good news potentially.
Can you see the point on the gasket where it has failed

Yes Stevo, on 4 & 5, but as I pulled over and stopped when it happened, it's little more than a stain. Bit like a poo stripe in yer skiddies =))

Mmmm whilst you in there and all that...port and polish head, high lift can, bore out cylinders...

Oh as you have the manifold off might as well do the M50 intake...or supercharger?
;)

Nice to hear it's all clean in there, what's the mileage?

Hi Mike, the oil can only have been coming from the head gasket. I've checked everything that's come off so far and there are no broken pipes, hoses etc. The engine block and head are not cracked as far as I can see and all the oil staining is below the cylinder head/engine block joint.

Is it near to where the pressured oil feed passes from the block to head Garry?

Tony.

ps. Glad to hear you're making some progress mate.

Good news so far Gary, would it be best to have the head skimmed while you've got it off just to be sure. can you check to see if any of the piston rings have broken ?

I'll get the head skimmed if it's warped, but I'll know more after I've checked it properly. I'm pretty certain that the piston rings are OK. The cylinder walls are not scored

Do you mean where the crank case vents to the sump from the head ? If so, no mate. But your question has raised another in my mind =))
I'll have a think tomorrow when the beer wears off a bit

No mate, I meant where the oil feed (full pressure) comes from the block (oil pump) into the head to supply the camshafts etc

Tony.

That’s potentially good news, so it was just head gasket failure? I was wondering due to the reported oil loss at the scene.

Would it be worth while to have the head blue printed to check 100% on a possible warp?
And magnafluxed in case of hairline cracks??

It's good to see that you've made progress. It's always a relief to see everything first hand with your own eyes and not have all those questions going around in your head worring about what might be wrong. Now the path before you is a clear cut one and you can plan the repairs ahead of you. Engine looks good and clean....................Frankie
