It's part of the handbrake on a Z3 and I could do with replacing it. Thanks.IMG_20200112_175902.jpg

Hi Nick,
These are the exploded views of the Z3 handbrake ( 1.9 M44 ) and I cant see it shown in either of them.
I have just stripped mine down and haven’t come across one.

It looks as if it would fit over the ends of the cables where t he locking nuts are. May have been put there if the cables had stretched, by previous owner????? Just a guess on my part.

It is a part of the OEM set up but doesn't show on Real OEM. it stops the cable from twisting when turning the adjustment nuts, I know some people don't bother to refit it as some replacement cables do not fit in the holes. A couple of thick washers would be OK to seat the nuts on but you will need to hold the cable while adjusting the nuts.

When I replaced the handbrake cables on my Z3 I had to file the holes out to fit the new sprightly larger cable ends.

As mentioned above, it stops the cables twisting and that's the reason I was after one really. One of the cables is twisting a bit as there is a bit of tough section on the thread as I put the nut on. I looked at the diagrams too and thought it was weird that none of them show it.

Try contacting one of our resident breakers Nick. Some one will have one.

This taken from my Handbrake cable replacement write up.

Step 7. Remove the 2x 14mm nuts from the cables inside the car being careful to retrieve the double washer/plate which goes over the 2 cable threaded sections. Then from under the car you can pull the cables out of the steel sleeves in the car floor.

Step 8. Check your new cables,(a) that the double washer fits snugly over the threaded sections where they are machined flat (mine didn't and had to be filed out a little) and (b) that they fit into the holes through the hubs (again mine didn't and had to be drilled out, which left them slightly over big so I applied some silicone sealant before fitting into the holes to prevent any rattles).

I contacted my local BMW today and it’s not even on their exploded view.

Despite me sending a picture of it, telling them where it goes, and what it’s function is. I had a reply asking me for a picture of where it’s located on the car so they could forward to BMW Technical for them to investigate.......

what a bunch of Kn**heads.

I will get a piece of brass and make one if none of our breakers have any

They want a picture of it in place on the car..... apparently saying it goes over the cables at the front of the handbrake and the two locking nuts tighten down on to it is not good enough.

Definitely not shown on here. Not really needed, another example of "over engineering" TBH.

I only want it because one of the cables is twisting when I try to tighten it. The washer I have has worn to the point where it is not preventing the cable from turning.
