Have a look on RealOEM and see if it was fitted on any other E36 models. It may still not be available though.

Tony.

Just had a look in the Bentley manual.

They show it using two plain washers and only a single nut ( nyloc?), and in the description says to hold the cable.

Probably a BMW cost cutting exercise !!!!!

Pretty sure mine has single washers but two nuts, one large one small on each cable

The cables have two flat sides on the cross section. If that is not to stop them twisting when tightened with this washer in place, what is that design for?

I would guess you are correct and it probably is just for that reason, perhaps it was a later mod due to feedback from dealer mechanics or came supplied with replacement cables from BMW??

Curiosity got the better of me. My M does indeed have the same piece fitted?

I have just had an email from BMW to say they have ordered in a complete handbrake assy. ( to see if it is included) :banghead::banghead::banghead:

1) I don’t need a handbrake
2) Couldn’t they just ask the spares people???

Anyway , I have ordered a piece of brass on eBay which will be enough to make a few. Just need to take all the various measurements off my car with a vernier, bit of drilling, bit of filing......
it can’t be that difficult :whistle::whistle:

BMW Technical Reply......

Hi,

I have had a response from BMW technical. Unfortunately this part is not available anymore, they believe the handbrakes were modified and the cable guide now has a retainer built in to stop the cable rotating. Apologies we are unable to get the plate and I hope this information is helpful.

Kind regards,

.......:bashhead:

Thank you for your efforts. It looks like we're making our own then! I have a laser cutter but it will only cut plastic and wood. I am not sure if either would be strong enough to be useful.

I have just qualified for ‘TW@ of the year’ =))=))=))=))

I ordered a bit of brass plate from ebay ( really cheap and free delivery) and its due on friday, so I thought....a nice clean job I could do this afterrnoon........was to get the various dimensions off my car and sketch out the plate.
Worked out the overall size from the spacing where the cables come through at the handbrake. Got the centres ok,
Then went to get the dimension of the cable flats to work out where the slots go.....

What a frickin’ idiot I am.....my brake cables dont have the flats, so obviously not originals, and why the plate is not fitted.:bashhead::bashhead::bashhead:

I make @Grumps look like an amateur, when it come to Tw@ status....=))=))=))=))

However, I will be getting new cables and they may have flats on them so I still may need a plate.
Nick, in the meantime, if you could let me know the dimension is across the cable flats, I might still have a go at making one.

I bought my cable through a dealership and it had the flat profile. Whoever fitted the other side used a third party one but that is flat too. Maybe it depends on the manufactured year. Mine is 1998 (registered 1999). I will measure the plate for you later.
