Brrrrrrrr.... It's cold in here!

Had to do a 70 mile round trip today and again it had me wondering whether it is heater matrix or water pump. As I got onto the motorway and was cruising along at 60, the temperature was quite pleasant and after about 20 mins it was almost too warm. I would have turned it down except that I knew that once I got back into ordinary traffic it'd cool down (which it did). The same occurred on the way home too.

So now I'm thinking that if the heater matrix needed replacement that it wouldn't get warm at all. I'm also thinking that perhaps if the water pump is on it's way out that this could explain why the temp gets nice and hot when I'm up the rev range a bit yet when I'm idling it gets cool.

Maybe I should try the water pump as it's the cheaper option and go for the heater matrix afterwards if that doesn't work.

On a positive note - it felt really good to be back behind the wheel and the roof repair held up very well despite heavy showers this morning ;-)

If somewhere in the matrix the coolant flow is strangled, from any reason, it will have the same simptoms as you found.
But as changing the water pump is recommended by BMW after 60 000 miles, better start with this. At a certain moment you should do it anyway.
Good luck!

I agree!

Would you recommend getting a BMW one or is there a good brand of other one (possibly with a metal impeller for example)?

I would suggest the "Soper of Lincoln BMW" for parts; they are supporter of the forum (very friendly) and everybody was satisfyied with price/ quality/ time.
Regarding the impeller most part of the owners here, are for metal.
The original was synthetic (plastic).
I , personally, mounted one with plastic impeller this spring. After 5000 km everything is ok.
The price should reflect the quality. The Stewart water pump has an excellent reputation.

I read about the Stewart - About the same price as one from BMW and apparently they are very good indeed. I couldn't find a UK reseller though.

I've emailled Soper and I'm just awaiting a reply. In the meantime I'm looking at some for sale online with metal impeller. Does anyone know what the BMW part number for the waterpump is (I'd hate to get the wrong one).

Thanks.

ps... I can't seem to find a UK stockist of those high flowing Stewart water pumps anywhere. Has anyone had luck with this?

11510393338 BMW part number for the water pump

If you have not modified the engine why put an upgraded water pump in, the original pump when working dies the job, just replace with a like item and save some money.

I think I've said it before in this thread but I fitted this type last year - good brand - good reputation - good price and it certainly keeps my heater warm.
If you prefer to pay ~£130 for a Stewart then fair enough..........

Me too I paid almost the same with you for a Ruville water pump and seems to me a good quality. Made just 5000 km with , in this summer.
I would say is acceptable as price/ quality.
Up to me I will not pay as much for a Stewart, as long I use the car in the low/ middle range performance.

I'll order the motormec pump I think, especially if it has a metal impeller. Now I just need to find a mechanic prepared to fit it for me. I spoke to the one that changed the thermostat for me but for some unknown reason he seems reluctant do so it saying that he's certain the the existing one is ok and that he had tested it.

Grrrrr!!!

To clarify this particular pump is manufactured by Meyle and in this case is supplied by Motormec. It does have a metal impeller and was recommended to me on another forum.
It's a bit of a puzzle as to why your mech does not want the job. In theory, the old pump should come out easily using two jacking screws, but on occasions they are a swine to get out (as I found out with mine) and maybe this concerns him. After your previous experience I wouldn't use him anyway.

If you do have pump changed, then while system is drained, have mech flush through various routes with a hose pipe, particularly heater and block, incase anything was missed on previous efforts.

Any news yet on the heater issues.

Just looking at the parts list and there is an electrically operated va;ve in the heater circuit perhaps this is not opening fully so when the engine is spinning whilst driving the pump produces enough pressure to overcome it but when at idle there is not enough pressure.

Part no 4 in this diagram.

Should be able to take it out and see if it opens fully.

Not quite the same job, but, I was given a water pump to do on a 2006 320d this afternoon at work. I wouldn't rush to volunteer for another in a big rush.:(

Obviously you just aren't hungry enough T-tony! lol JIM

@Brian4, if I recall the mechanic flushed both the valve and heater core and gave the green light, but I'm kind of leery about a guy that won't change a water pump for a paying customer. JIM
