On a drive out last Tuesday night (well taxi service for one of my boys) I noticed a loud clicking/ticking sound when stationary, a quick walk around the car I found the nearside wheel roasting hot...bugger stuck caliper. Managed to free it off enough to get home.
Had a hunt around for caliper rebuild kits and I found one of many on ebay which included a new piston, seal, dust guard and guide pin sleeves, The kit for both side £48.00.
Today I took off the caliper to see if I could see why it was sticking and hey presto.
This is the culprit, by the looks of, the dust guard had been dislodged for a while.
With the caliper stripped apart you can see the deformation in the dust seal.
The piston had also seen better days with corrosion down the piston.
The new items were installed, caliper fitted back on the car and brakes bled, nice job for a Sunday morning, took approx 1 - 1 1/2hrs all in.

More satisfying doing a rebuild yourself rather than buying one Brian. Reasonable cost too.

Well found before causing more problems. I rebuilt ours last winter and a satisfying job.
Cost was not too bad Tony compared to either paying for a refurb or buying a new caliper.
Agree Brian, I would not have tackled this job a couple of years ago but after refurbishing the calipers on the Z3 it gave me the confidence to do this job today, kept everything nice and clean as I went along.
I used to find that hardest bit was getting the piston "square" to the calliper to get it to push in!

Yes mate, we can do that. Be best if you could remove them and bring them over as we would need to paint them at the same time? Either that or you might have to leave Reggie here for a week. How far is it to Cadwell from here Sean?

Sounds like a plan boys now get it coordinated please and send loads of pics!! I've already got bloody cabin fever and we've only had snow and low temps for a week!! By January I'll be ready to take the plunge off the hydro dam down the road!! JIM
Had a visit from Mr Vanos this morning, the previous owner had declared that this was something on the radar to be sorted at some point before I bought the car so I contacted Steve a few weeks ago to book the car in.Steve is a really nice guy, he travelled up to me this morning, arrived on time and cracked on with the job.
Work carried out was, a reconditioned Vanos with new seals, new vanos oil pump, timing chain tensioner and the valve clearances were sorted, I need 2 shims.
Not a cheap day but something I need to do for my piece of mind. I would recommend him to anyone who needs this type of work doing.

Had a trip to Wales this weekend and attended the BMWCC Anglesey Track Day, Had a great day all in all, the weather forecast lied a bit (well a lot really) as we were promised some dry clear skies but this did not happen, the day started damp and just got worse, by the end of the day water was running across the track in places making it interesting
The car was faultless all day, driving in the wet certainly teaches patience.

What a great video Brian. Shame about the weather though.You still got up to some good speeds though.
