New OEM fan blade or "ventilator" as they call it - hopefully made of non-exploding material...

Good luck mate, hoping for better results this time round
I meant to message you to say the rad arrived safely, but didn't...

Managed to get it fitted on a Saturday morning, nice easy job. Handy you cut the pipes to take rad off because I broke a jubilee clip, so had some spare :)

For reference this diagram on realoem.com is not helpful. I had already noticed this when I fitted the original, but forgot to update this thread at the time.

It suggests bolting through from the rear, but if you do this you can't fit the thing on the car. The clutch goes between the water pump and blades, and you bolt through the front.

I remembered unscrewing the blade from the clutch when it was still on the engine originally. The rust around the bolt holes on the original fan also confirm this - just in case you think I fitted the replacement wrong causing it to explode ;)

I read an article about the EMP Stewart waterpump back in 2008 -Very possitive - and I'm dead certain that when I'll have to change it on my Zed, I'l also dig deep into my pockets and buy one of those - and maybe Evans coolant instead of ordinary coolant....

But first I have to fix an odd noise in the front suspension (lower wishbones or something) and fnd a new right front wheel or maybe have it refurbished. Some idiot (guess who) :( hit a kerb last season on one of the last sunny driving days - first time ever, that I've scratched a rim - my lovely styling 78 :arghh:.

I put a Stewart pump in mine few weeks ago and they do look a decent bit of kit but certainly not cheap !!

Just read a similar tread in another forum, this fellow found that his fan flew apart because the motor mounts had gone bad.

It is something I had considered as a possibility, but don't have the means to check the engine mounts. There's not a lot of room between the fan and the cowl. The plastic the fan cowl is made out of was clearly brittle (12 years old) as the bits that I picked out of the engine bay snapped easily by hand.

Hey guys, noob here....

I am waiting to take delivery of my 2001 2.2i here in Australia and am scared senseless regarding the water pump failures and damage that seems to happen on a far too often regular basis. I do not know if my car has had the water pump and such replaced and it has done 99,000 Klm. To that end I am trying to gather information on how I can do the fan delete mod - I like to be prepared, but am having problems sourcing stuff.

I ask - Is it viable to just remove the fan and the clutch and leave the water pump in, then mount a 14' fan directly to the radiator with some sort of thermostat controller [is a shroud or the original cowling required]? My thinking is that if the water pump does fail in the future it won't make the radiator into a lawn sprinkler. Sure the pump will be gone, but I can pull over and then deal with the issue in the garage. Thanks in advance.

Ps. I have tried to contact the other Australian members on the East Coast where they get parts from but neither have responded. If you need specs my VIN is WBACN12070LL73078.

Thanks woody, I am considering it and trying to find one in Australia. I will probably change the thermostat at the same time while things are in bits. :)

Bruce, I am not 100% sure what you mean. Do you mean that you replaced the rad with the larger one as the link shows, installed an electric fan directly to the rad with a new stat, and therefore removed the oem fan and fan clutch and cowling - correct? Now, even if the water pump fails there is no chance of damage by fan and stuff???

Hi cooper indeed that is what I done...it does free up a few hp in my case it was the clutch on the fan that failed which in turn b******* up the water pump and then the fan went through the rad and smashed the cowling as well...feel a lot more comfortable now.

This was a big power saving mod in the 70's we had to change a lot of mechanical fans over to electric ones on Chrysler cars and also electronic ignition.

just to put your mind at rest a bit..

I had my water pump and thermostat replaced today along with an oil service and plugs, air filter and new aircon belt..

old one looked fine! could have gone another 67,000 miles!

it does happen but given the volume of cars made is only a very small percentage of cars...having said that i'm glad I did it, you cannot put a price on peace of mind..
