Ok so working on the wiring for the latch and handle today ...phew.. but I managed to get it working with the central locking so I'm pretty happy - just jerry rigged at the moment so need to tidy it all up but progress.

Hi Piran, making good progress I see. Well done 👏

How did you manage to get the boot to central lock. I've just fitted my handles (went for classic mini) and central locking works great with them.

Currently have the boot to open normally with the handle but would love to link it to the central locking.

I opted for external triumph boot hinges and a bonnet stay from a vw polo as I was concerned about flexing with gas struts.

Cheers

I've repurposed the actuator from the boot, using it to enable or disable the lock.

Hooked it up to a relay I had knocking about from a previous project, and Bob's your uncle 👍

When you activate the central locking the actuator moves the arm (which you don't need) but also presses a microswitch changing the connection on the second plug which you can then use to only connect the switch to ground if the car is unlocked. I've used the relay as I wasn't sure about the current for the lock release through the microswitch but you could possibly get away without it.

So have you removed the actuator from the old zed boot lid and reinstalled it (for wiring purposes) somewhere in the boot.

I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

Thanks Piran 👍🏻

Hey Piran

Hit a stumbling block. Clearly something I'm not doing correctly. Handle still works but not isolated when central locking pressed.

Just for clarification the actuator has 2 plugs.

Small one (3 wires) red/black-perm live, white/green, white/blue

Large one (2 wires) blue, white

Are you leaving all these connected and taking a feed from.....in which case....which cable to handle and which to relay.

The latch that I have is the vw 4 wire with manual lever (brown, brown/black, brown/blue, white/green.....which cables are you using for relay and earth.

Currently managing to work the handle with white/green as live andbrown as earth. Other 2 redundant.

Appreciate your help.

Thanks

On the actuator keep the big blue and white connection. The other connector you unplug and put new connection to the switch, I'll check the relay in a minute

The small connector is what changes when the car is locked/unlocked, three pins two connected in each position I'm using that to make a connection when unlocked and break it when locked

Would you mind drawing a diagram please.

Are you saying that the wires from the small connector are cut and go to the switch and relay (in which case which wire to switch and which to relay) the red/black wire of the 3 is a permanent live....where does this go.

Many thanks

I'll see what I can do, but I've ignored the wires that were there and plugged in two new wires. Internally it's just a dual pole microswitch so depending on whether the car is locked or unlocked you will either get pins 1 and 2 or pins 2 and 3 connected so I have two new wires that connect to the switch and the relay such that when the car is unlocked the relay is earthed

Front end coming together (still more work to do on the brackets though):

I've glued and fibreglassed the fixings to the bonnet panel and bootlid:

I've put a brace across the front two bolts on the bootlid to make sure there's not so much stress on the fibrelgass.
Now to the boot lock etc. and wiring the lights and boot handle next.

👌🏻
I'm really liking the simplicity of this Piran. The lines look great. I'm now toying with removing my external Triumph chrome hinges and fitting the old zed boot hinges without the gas strut. I managed to get a vw polo bonnet stay with fixing brackets for £10 from my local scrapyard. It's the perfect length and is fitted to the large plastic trim panel at the rear of the old zed boot....so neat and tidy. At a later date I'll add a locator on the boot lid for when the stay is being used.

Great work 👏 keep it up

Back end is getting there:

Need to fit the Fog and reversing lights and still haven't done the locking plate for the bootlid. Put the wheel liners back on and the rear is pretty much done. Back to the front next week.

Looking good. Haven't got round to wheel liners yet. Do they fit or is there a bit to make up
