@g8jka changed from the 2.0 to the 2.8 and has now done the M54 manifold swap too. He know exactly the differences.
Yes, I had the 2.0 for 6.5 years and was always quite happy with it but at the time was the biggest engine I could afford. Coming from an E36 325 I always found it slightly under powered and did have my foot flat to the floor most of the time to get anything out of it. I took it on the Welsh cruise last year and it wasn't out of it's league but I always fancied a faster one. Originally I wanted a 3.0 but the prices were still well out of my range and infact I only purchased the 2.8 because it was a bargain. It was the best move I made and the difference in power was amazing and it goes well enough without having your foot flat down on the accelerator all the time. Since having it I have done the M54 manifold conversion which again made a pretty big difference and it pulls like a train all the way through the gears now and doesn't seem to want to stop. Yes if I could I would have a 3.0 but I would be looking 3-4K at least, on top of what I paid for the 2.8 for not a massive jump in BHP. For that money I would want something with the BHP of an ///M but obviously price wise that didn't work.

The best thing to do is have a test drive, there are plenty of 2.8's out there and if your in no rush you will find a bargain and may not even have to add any money towards the cost of one once you sell the 2.0. Obviously the 3.0 would be the obvious choice but you are probably looking at least double of what you will pay for a 2.8 and are they double the fun, I don't think so as the 2.8 is a mighty fine car.

Great Feedback thanks g8jka.

I am on the same scenario came from a e36 light chassis 325i and felt that straight away. I am not in a rush at all as my car is a weekend toy anyway and is great. But will keep an eye out for a good 2.8 and will test drive both the 2.2 and 2.8.

Thanks for the help.

I have a 3.0 and 2.8 at the moment. The 3.0 is faster flat out but it's difficult to tell them apart performance wise 90% of the time. If anything the 2.8 has more low down power.

Had a 1.9 16v first and to be fair that was nippy but you found the limits of it's performance pretty quick, that being said I don't remember having to drop a cog going uphill @60mph though sounds a bit odd.

i throw a spanner in the works i have a 1.9 and love the way it handles, so nimble and taught feeling.. and when i first had it thought it would be good as an auto... it has torque... maybe not bucket loads but it pulls real well, and has what i would call real world performance.!!!!..

I also have a 2.3 turbo saab 95 aero at 280 bhp and love that turbo feel...when it kicks in.. its a big old turbo so takes a while..

I can't comment on any of the six cylinders but love the sound of a six cylinder, but I do wonder about that extra weight especially on the smaller engined sixes.. the 2.0 and the 2.2.. what is the BHP / Ton on those compared to a 1.9 ?

I Also do question what a 1.9 would be like with some mild tweaking maybe exhaust and a remap....?

Erm, interesting the 20 Kg difference between the M42 & the M44, wonder where that went?

The m42 facelift has the wide body the m44 1998 1,9 is narrow body...plus different boot lid on the facelift maybe heavier just a thought...

plus i would have thought the m42 has the 8 valve cylinder head lighter as oppose to the heavier m44 16 valve head.... so thought they would maybe balance out...

who knows the secret of the black magic box....!!!!

Have you ever drove one with the 2.0L engine? If yes did you feel much difference?
When I was buying my car I test drove a 2.2 that felt quicker already but was the same money and way worse condition.

Thanks
Yes mate i drove Tonys old 2.0. Big differance between them. Yep a 3.0 would be nice but the price difference is considerable and i personally prefer pre face life cars. 3.0 only comes as a facelift.

@Rui Almeida if you are thinking yours is down on power I would first off get the codes read and see what comes up. If the cam sensors are faulty you will notice a good increase in drivability once replaced.150 hp shouldn't need to drop a gear up hill unless it is steep.

Thank you all.

One very true is that I believe the 1.9 140bhp is actually faster than my 2.0 6cyl 150bhp more because the whole car is lighter even engine wise as well.
Thanks @Brian4 I will have engine codes checked over. I thought it was strange as if I put my foot down on 5th doesn't pull. To be honest in 3rd at 3000rpm if I put my foot down doesn't pull at all. Needed to wait ages so the same with 4th and 5th at higher speeds. Allways thought that 15bhp should feel this slow but always assumed that would be because of the weight.

Thanks everyone will have this checked before thinking of selling it.

Everything is equal when pottering around at 50mph with the roof down enjoying the sun with the wind whistling over your bald spot.

2.8 is the answer, sell yours and buy a nice 2.8 before they become expensive.

Mine never fails to put a smile on my face. its not modern day rapid but more than quick enough ... it will do 100mph without even thinking about it.

the roll on from 70mph to 100mph is silly

3.0 is the holy grail of non ///M Zeds but they are priced accordingly.

M52 2.8 + M50 Manifold = 220bhp anyway which is more than enough
