The 60 s were a wonderful time to be a teenager into music. My chums played on tennis rackets with me on biscuit tins and wooden spoons miming to the early Beatles records! I taught myself the very basics of drumming listening to (the session drummer) and watching Ringo on 'Love Me Do'. One of my chums went along to a band audition for a singer, and I went along for moral support. He couldn't really sing all that well, so he didn't get the nod, but they said that they were also looking for a drummer. I had never sat behind a kit before, so I said give me 10 minutes on my own to get used to the kit, pedals etc.. The rest of the band came in and we played 2 or 3 numbers and they asked me to join them. That's how it all started for me drumming wise, playing pop.
Then we got into The Stones, The Yardbirds, (with Eric!) The Animals (what a voice Eric Burdon had!) John Mayall early Fleetwood Mac, and the blues in all its forms.
My chums and I used to go to the Blues Club at The Toby Jug pub in Tolworth, Surrey, which was always packed to capacity. We saw John Mayall, Dave Edmunds, (remember Sabre Dance?) and the early Fleetwood Mac there. All so very good. One of the guitarists in Fleetwood Mac came on with a condom half filled with milk hanging from tuning keys on his guitar! The Mac ripped the place up that night, Jeremy Spencer on Slide, oh man, Elmore eat your heart out. Check his playing out on Fleetwood Mac live YouTube.
Enough already, hope my ramblings didn't bore you.
Bonzo.
