.....meanwhile down in Aus:

‘I left my Dad my mint Z4 back in UK to look after and he’s totally knackered it!’

Welcome and sure you’ll get it sorted (before he’s back ideally ;) )

On the Z-4forum.com there are a few people that will fix the roof https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=73041
Many thanks for the link to the roofing expertsLooks a better option than I've got so far!! Still waiting for the report on the EML issues. Hopefully will hear soon.
Hi Mike, :welcome: from Mid-Wales. You honestly will not find a more helpful and friendly Forum than this, I guarantee it.
Colin.
Seems that way so far, very pleased with support from members on my first day. I live in South Wales between Cardiff and Bridgend. Hoping to get to know a lot more about the car and its pro's and cons over the coming weeks.
Many thanks to you all for your support and offers .
The car was really running poorly yesterday and only firing on 3 cylinders so driving too far for the EML issue probably not a good idea. I will take you up on the roof repair offer Ducklakeview and will be in touch when I get it running right.
Fingers crossed the EML repair isn't too expensive.

Hey Mike, I can't really say enough about Mike (@Ducklakeview ) , he came to my house before Christmas to relocate several members roof motors on their Z4s. A very knowledgeable and nice fella. We had a good day all round. We've had a couple of 4 cyl. Z4s in at work with the exhaust manifold cracked which makes them run rough. Could be that. Hope you get it sorted and are able to enjoy the gift of using the car while your boy is away.

Tony.

Thank you. How far is that from Mike up in St. Helens?

Tony.

A lovely drive through Wales from south to north, or a boring M4/M5/M6. I know which I would choose:).
Just checked google Maps and it says 206 miles about 4hrs 20 through mid Wales avoiding the motorways. Hopefully get the car back today and plan a trip within the next couple of weeks. Getting rather buzzed by the thought of it

Hi Dino D, he might well be thinking that or he's thinking I've left my dad my knackered z4 and if I stay in Oz long enough he's going to get it back in concours condition.
I haven't mentioned the dings on the bumpers

Now that’s a cunning plan if I ever heard one!

You in the right place to get it sorted anyhow.

Update on EML situation is the Indy has said the underlying cause of the misfire is slack timing chain and a defective coil pack. ( see report of error codes on pic below)
The Indy is saying timing chain will be £970. Have asked if they've tried just replacing the coil pack and was told no! Not impressed with their diagnostic approach so far, but it seems I should get the coil pack changed first ( just been quoted 228 for one and 350 for all 4) and see if it resolves the problem. Any advice on timing chains greatly received.

Hey Mike, you will be going right by my place in Llan'dod (A483) if you are going the pretty route. I'll give a wave and take a photo as you pass:D:D. Or you can stop for a coffee!!
I was going up to St.Helens regularly last year and it took anywhere between 2.45 and 2.15 hours depending on the traffic and road works. So, 4.20 from Cowbridge sounds about right.

How many miles are on the car?? Slack timing chain being the cause is a new one on me.. POSSIBLY the tensioner may be faulty..

Just looked at that printout, a faulty VANOS solenoid could well cause what he "thinks" is a slack chain. Easy, and relatively cheap fix on that engine.

Hi Mike many thanks for the reassuring chat. Have just phoned the Indy and told them I wasn't going ahead with anything and she sounded well unhappy!
Will do as you suggested and change the coil pack to see if it gives an overall improvement, and then plan the rest.

Update on EML issues. Having told the Indy I was collecting the car I turned up without the tech having completed the reassembly of the cover. I saw how easily accessible the coil packs are and was staggered to believe the 2.5 hours labour I'd been quoted. As Mike (Ducklakeview) directed I picked replacement coil pack For £23 Inc vat and fitted it myself under mikes guidance. Result was misfire gone but EML still on so took myself back to motor retailer and bought the other 3 coil packs. Car now running sweet and no EML. Total cost of coil packs £86 Saving £260 on the Indy price. I did end up coughing up £55 to the Indy for the report attached which hasn't spoiled my day. I did learn there's good compression on all cylinders 210-220psi and they confirmed the roof problem is the motor failed. Big big thanks to Mike(Ducklakeview) for the epic help and to all for your warm words of encouragement and welcome. Things looking much better and just had a little taste of the car. I've got that stupid grin on my face and I think I'm going to like it a lot
